Letter to the Editor

Cooperation was key to case

To the Editor:

As we read and see on television how the Zachary Snider case has been closed with Chris Stevens apparently spending the rest of his life in prison, it might do well to reflect on it.

Although my name appeared on the probable cause affidavit for his arrest and some of the search warrants, this case is a prime example of how good things can happen when the criminal justice system works together.

There were prosecutors who stayed after hours to prepare the documents and a judge who was kept waiting until I arrived to sign the warrants. Also, the present prosecutor's office that spent the last two years working almost on a daily basis preparing for a re-sentencing.

At the crime scene there were officers from many agencies working long hours assisting to make sure the scene was preserved.

The Indiana State Police crime scene techs had a grisly job to do, but as usual did an outstanding job.

It is very interesting to notice as this case went through the appeals process at a snail's pace that the only error made was made by the defense.

To me, that was a great testimony for all the people involved. The paperwork and the police involvement were not issues.

There also was outstanding cooperation from the community during the initial search and during the investigation.

As there are too many to mention by name, in closing I would like to thank all the people who helped bring this case to an end -- and maybe you all helped save another little boy's life.
