Recycling continues to raise money

GREENCASTLE -- Over the last six months the Banner Graphic was able to donate over $800 to the Putnam County Humane Shelter thanks to the recycle bins in the parking lot.

Over the last two months, more than 13,000 pounds of recyclable paper has been collected in the Retriever bins at the Banner Graphic.

The next six months of donations will go to the Putnam County Senior Center's Food Bank.

This year, the Food Bank has seen a large increase in the number of people it serves. As of the middle of August, the Food Bank has served 207 households and 824 people in 2009.

"For people who already give to the food pantry this is another way they can contribute. Just bring your paper products to the Retriever paper bins in the back corner of the Banner parking lot," said Machelle Whitney, with the Banner Graphic.

For those who want to contribute directly to the food pantry, here are some suggested items: tuna, canned meats, vegetables and fruits (no fresh or frozen), cereal, juices, pork and beans, macaroni and cheese, soups, peanut butter and dry milk.

"These are items that go out in every box we prepare," said Francis Washburn with the Senior Center. "Other items donated are used as extras that people can choose."

Last year, non-profit organizations raised over a quarter of a million dollars for community outreach programs and recycled more than 15,000 tons.

There are great benefits to the environment and community by recycling. It helps reduce landfill use and saves water and energy.

All your newspapers, magazines, office and school papers, folders, fax paper, shopping catalogs and mail can be placed in the container for recycling.

Paper placed in the Retriever bin is sent directly to paper mills and is remanufactured into newsprint within a few weeks of collection. Paper Retriever is the global leader in the manufacturing and recycling of newsprint.
