City to pave Barnaby Mill Road

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

GREENCASTLE -- The City of Greencastle will soon have the opportunity to finish a project it started almost three years ago.

The Common Council approved a resolution Tuesday evening for $70,000 from the cumulative capital development fund to be used to pave Barnaby Mill Road on the city's west side.

The area became the city's responsibility in 2007, and water and sewer lines were run to the area at that time. However, the city has not had the funds to pave the road until now.

"I'm glad we're getting it done because it's been about three years. Glad to be putting the finishing touches on it," councilor Mark Hammer said.

The council also put the finishing touches on the 2010 budget, approving the budget and tax rates 4-1 on second reading.

The dissenting vote came from councilor T.J. smith, who made a motion to increase the line item for a CPA in the clerk-treasurer budget from $2,200 to $3,000. This issue had been a point of contention in previous budget talks.

"We got a great report from the state board of accounts, and we're working with a large budget," Smith said. "I think it gives the city and the council a great security blanket that we get everything squared away with the State Board of Accounts."

Councilor Phyllis Rokicki seconded Smith's motion, but it failed to find further support and was voted down 3-2.

Councilor Mark Hammer, who had been against the originally proposed level of $3,000 said there is room in the budget for a CPA's assistance; he simply did not believe it needed to be that high.

"We have budgeted for $2,200. I think it should probably just stay where it is," Hammer said.

  • Sounds like a waste of money. That is a very long road with no more than 3 houses on the road. I think their are only 2 though, maybe 3.

It will just be one more road that the city can not take care of.

  • There are 4 houses on that road. The number really doesn't matter that much. If you are in the city limits and have the negatives of being in city limits, you should have the positives also. That includes a paved road. The city chose to incorporate that area.

  • OMG way back when, Nancy Michael promised that road would be fixed in 2003, so 3 years is BS. 3 years ago is when the city might have took it over but the folks back there have had to pay in town taxes rates for years and did not have anyone plowing snow on that road, any maintenance of that road or anything. Trash truck has been hung up on that road 15 times I bet in the last 15 years. So FINALLY is all I can say. Oh and Fraizer Street in that area is not much better.

  • How many more years will it be before the road gets paved in front of the middle school? Nice place to have a road where adults have to dodge bad pavement, much less newer drivers and buses. I'm not so upset about Barnaby Mill Road but it ticks me off to see new pavement around the post office area that could have waited, but we get our teeth shook loose driving by the school no matter how slow we drive. If you don't want to think safety think looks, out of city visitors coming to school functions get the pleasure of playing dodge, dip, dive, darn before they can pull in the parking lot too. Let's rename the road so it can serve as a warning if it's going to stay that way, my vote is Corn Field Drive.

  • I agree with fixing Percy Julian Drive. Their are roads that are ten miles out of town that are smoother than that road.
