GREENCASTLE -- One man sustained a gunshot wound in a Tuesday night standoff southeast of the city.

Officers responded to the scene at county roads 300S and 500E some time before 8 p.m. An unidentified suspect had apparently barricaded himself inside his home. It was unclear if the situation involved any hostages.

Around 8:30 p.m., reports came across the scanner of a male down with a gunshot wound on the upper inside of his left thigh. Medics responded to the scene, and he was eventually airlifted to Wishard Hospital by PHI helicopter.

Negotiators were on the phone for several hours, working toward a peaceful resolution.

At approximately 12:20 a.m., a male suspect was said to be in custody. The standoff apparently ended without further incident.

With agencies still on the scene, no confirmed details were available at press time.

  • Yes, it was.

The man shot was a member of the SWAT team.

  • I heard that the person shot was a "rider" not affiliated with any department at all?

  • The person shot himself in the leg accidentally while he was crawling on the ground. He's too young to be in a situation like this.

  • What do you define as too young when there are 18 and 19-year-olds in Iraq?

  • From someone who was there last night, I know for a fact. That the man in the house never fired a shot. The officer was injured by a self inflicted wound. It was an accident, he fell.

Gun went off, and he was air lifted out.

The man in HIS house never once fired a shot!

This article makes it sound like he shot the officer, not true. I was there, I know!

I'm sure MR. Jared Jernagan printed what he thought was the facts, but that is far from what people are assuming from this article. I suggest this be corrected, fast.

(just telling it like it was.)

  • the man who was shot was NOT a member of the swat team, merely a civilian rider

  • I think every one just needs to chill out and wait on an official statement from the Sheriffs Department. This is how rumors and mass hysteria start, some one posts what they think is the facts, then some one who claims to have been there ((Which I highly doubt which is breaking protocal, not to mention illegal, to make comments on an on going investigation to people that are not even Law Enforcement officers (let alone making statements under a nickname on a newspaper website!))) So why dont we all just calm down and wait for the real facts to come out through a statement from Sheriff Finwick.

  • Thought names are not suppose to used. This is the second time a name has appeared. This family needs prayer instead of everyone sticking their nose into what is none of your business. Some day this could be your family and would you want everybody sticking their nose in your business.

  • Guns are dangerous no matter who has it in there hands.Properly trained or not.A domestic situation is one that anyone can get hurt.Accidents do happen, humans make mistakes,Learn from them.

  • First of all there is no swat team there is an ERT team. And the young man shot is NOT on that team he was a civilian rider, and he belongs to no department he was simply a volunteer. He is recovering just fine. No shots were fired at him or any other officers it was an accidental discharge plain and simple. I personally appreciate what this young man was trying to do by helping the police its too bad more kids his age arent out trying to make the community a better place. So stop the attacks get your facts right. DONT BE DUMB P.S. Emergency Response Team

  • I agree with the person that says we need to pray for this family. Nobody knows what happen and why it went the way it did. We all need to wait and see what the the authorities has to give about the details of what happen and the cause for this to happen the way it did. I just wished there was someone to direct traffic that was coming from SR. 240 on what direction to go and stead of blocking the road two roads that could of been taken to go around the area.

  • To answer all of your questions, the person that shot himself was the Sheriff's son. Thats why he, "a civilian", was allowed to be there, allowed to have a gun, and allowed to be crawling around in the grass.I would think as the sheriff, and a father, he would want to protect his child and not have him crawling around when there are trained members of the ERT to handle this.

  • We need some real police in this city! If there was a major crisis in this city Greencastle police would be ill prepared. Criticise my comment all you want but its the truth. I would rather see my tax dollars being spent on better training then having officers arrest and charge people for petty crimes.

  • Let's see.... An internal investigation by the Sheriff as to why his son shot himself while on a CIVILIAN ride along. This will make for some interesting reading. Does being the son of a law enforcement officer automatically give you the authorization to carry a firearm? If that's the case, I guess my driver's license gives me the ability to compete in a NASCAR race.

  • You think there will be an investigation? I think not. I'm just glad that the family is alright. Our prayers go out to everyone involved.
