Parks Dept. plans holiday programs

GREENCASTLE -- With the holidays just around the corner, the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department is planning three special programs in honor of the season.

The department will be sponsoring the Santa Claus Brickmania Challenge, a gingerbread house contest and Phone Call from Santa. The best part of all three contests is they are free.

Entrants for the Santa Claus Brickmania challenge are asked to create a Santa Claus sculpture out of their favorite building blocks -- Legos, Mega Bloks, other building blocks or a mixture thereof. Special prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners in the following age brackets: 5-10 years, 11-17 years and 18 and over.

For the gingerbread contest, confectioner "carpenters" are asked to construct and decorate a "house" using only edible items -- store bought kits may be used, but are not required. Special prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners in the following categories: individual, family and organization.

Entries for both contests must be the original creation of the entrant and be carried into Greencastle City Hall by 9 a.m. Dec. 2. The entries will be displayed throughout the day, with judging at 7 p.m. Awards will be issued at the start of the Greencastle Board of Park Commissioners meeting at 7:30 p.m. the same night.

Registration forms and a listing of contest rules are available at Bright Futures, Putnam County Public Library, Greencastle Pediatric Dentistry, and Greencastle City Hall.

Finally, the Parks Department has arranged a chance for 2- to 7-year-old children to receive a phone call from Santa prior to Christmas. On Dec. 12, calls from Santa's North Pole Hideaway will be made between 10 a.m. and noon to registered children. Registration forms, requesting special information, are available at Bright Futures, Putnam County Public Library, Greencastle Pediatric Dentistry, and Greencastle City Hall and must be turned into Greencastle City Hall by 4:30 p.m. Dec. 11 p.m.
