Guest innovator to visit Greencastle

GREENCASTLE -- As a continuation of active dialogue and creative partnerships leading to outcomes such as the expanded Downtown Farmers' Market, a Sustainable Greencastle Meeting will be open to the public on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in city hall.

The meeting will include a discussion with Denise Coogan, who has helped Lafayette's Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant achieve zero-landfill status and designation as a National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat. Coogan's account of innovations will not only connect directly to large facility operations managers, but also provide a relevant example of creativity for a broad range of community projects.

Following Coogan's presentation, the meeting will focus on ideas citizens bring for continuing sustainability efforts in the local community. Projects already underway include but are not limited to:

* Growing the Downtown Farmers' Market

* Creating Local Food for Neighbors in Need

* Communicating a Buy Local campaign

* Piloting an Energy Conservation Challenge

* Cultivating a community garden

* Expanding recycling programs

All of these initiatives are outcomes of "The Sustainable Greencastle Report," which was created last spring by more than 100 local people. Aiming to continue that same kind of broad community action, Sustainable Greencastle is an association connecting people and ideas for environmental solutions to strengthen our community, economy, culture and quality of life.

Sustainable Greencastle meetings are convened by the Greencastle Sustainability Commission. For more information, contact the Commission's chair, Steve Setchell, at sustainablegreencastle@gmail.com or 720-0673.
