Tiger Cubs move to 2-0 with win

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- Anyone who thinks that Mallory Miller is the only offensive weapon Greencastle posseses -- think again.

The Lady Tiger Cubs had three players in double digits. Miller led the team with 16 points, while Chelsea Samuels dominated the paint with 13 points and Tennille Burgeson chipped in 11 in Greencastle's 62-31 rout of Southmont Tuesday night.

"It was a good win for us," GHS coach Brad Key said. "I saw a lot of good things out there compared to our practices."

One improvement that Key saw Tuesday was Samuels' performance.

"Chelsea did a lot better in this game than she did Saturday," Key said. "She only had four points Saturday and tonight she had 13, and we need that. She is a big part of our offense and we need her to score."

Samuels established her presence under the basket early in the first quarter, putting up six of her 13 in the first two minutes of the game.

From the start of the game, the Lady Tiger Cubs forced Southmont to run the court, forcing them to turn the ball over and scoring on the transition. GHS outscored the Lady Mounties 18-4 in the first quarter and then 17-6 in the second.

"That is the one thing that we focus on in practice is the five-man fast break," Key said. "We want to get out there and run and I firmly believe that I have nine or 10 players that can go out and there and play."

He's right.

In the third quarter Hannah Wainman came off the bench, scoring four points while swiping the ball three times. Them Taylor Pruitt dominated the fourth period for GHS. Pruitt scored five of the Greencastle's 10 fourth-quarter points.

"I feel like we have some real good athletes that could help us down the road, so I wanted to give them some minutes playing tonight," Key said about his bench players. "I know Mallory Miller can play and Tennille Burgeson and Kayla Nobles will do their jobs. So it was good to get those players in.

"We can mass substitute in a game and not miss a beat," Key added.

By the halfway point on the final period of the game, Key had pulled his starters and put in bench to finish the game. The Lady Tiger Cubs' bench chipped in 18 points in Tuesday night's win with just over half of them coming in the second half.

Greencastle is now 2-0 for the second year in row and is back in action on Friday when it plays North Putnam in the second game of the Putnam County tournament at South Putnam starting at 7:30 p.m.
