Local food is topic of annual meeting

Monday, November 23, 2009

The Putnam County Extension Advisory Council will hold its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the Julian Science and Math Center, located at 602 S. Indiana Street in Room 251.

The program will feature a panel of individuals involved in various capacities of locally grown food. Panel members will include DePauw Food Service Director Steve Santo, Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray, Purdue Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator Ann Delchambre, Paula Evans representing the WIC Program and Greencastle Farmers Market, John Kessinger representing the Bainbridge Community Garden and Leroy Blocher representing the Greencastle Farmer's Market.

This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about local efforts to increase food produced in or relatively close to Putnam County and to discuss the philosophical reasons for decreasing food production mileage.

There will be a minimal amount of business conducted at the annual meeting, which includes approval of last year's minutes and the election of Extension Board members.

The public is invited to attend and the cost including the meal is $5. The meal cost is being offset by sponsors including Co-Alliance LLP, Hendrick's Power Cooperative, Parke County REMC, Teachers Credit Union, and Tri-County Bank and Trust. The menu includes broasted chicken, pineapple glazed ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, fruit, slaw, pasta salad, cinnamon rolls and dessert.

For tickets, contact the Purdue Extension-Putnam County office at 653-8411 or any Extension Board member.
