Tiger Cubs bring down Vikings

Greencastle's Kody Colllins goes to throw West Vigo's Levi Edwards during the 110-pound match at McAnally Thursday night. Collins lost the match by pinfall.

GREENCASTLE -- Head coach Matt McComish said before the seson that his younger wrestlers would have to step up this year for Greencastle to be successful.

Message received loud and clear.

After the West Vigo's Jacob Creasey pinned Tommy Downing in the second period of the 140-pound match, giving the Vikings a 30-18 lead, Greencastle needed a big win and they needed it quick. What they got was even better.

The Tiger Cubs swept the next six matches, winning the match 46-30 Thursday night -- and it all started with Carter Lewis.

Lewis stepped onto the mat and from the start had total control of the match. He nearly pinned his opponent in the first round, but was stopped by the buzzer. He finished the job in the second round, pinning Cole Bennett with :52 left in the second period.

"We had some of our younger guys step up tonight," McComish said. "Cater Lewis did a wonderful job and Tyler Hudson did too winning the 130-pound match for us."

Nolan Lewis followed Carter's lead, pinning his opponent in the first :28 of the 152-pound match. Nolan shot on John Burt, getting him to the ground fast, and posted himself on top for the pin.

Jesse Vermillion manhandled his opponent in the 160-pound class, pinning his in the first :26 of the match.

Then things got interesting for the Tiger Cubs.

Greencastle won the last three matches of the night, not by pin fall, but by decision. Jesse Ford won his match in the 171-pound class with a 9-2 decision, while Ben Hesler won the 189-poound match with a 9-5 decision, securing the victory for Greencastle. Nikko Hayden wrapped up the night for the Tiger Cubs with his 9-1 major decision in the 215-pound match.

"You know our older guys came through for us tonight also," McComish said. "We need Jesse Vermillion and Jesse Ford to be our leaders this year, along with Tommy Downing, Ben Hesler and Nolan Lewis.

"We still have guys that are first year wrestlers, getting experience and they might have not won tonight, but they did wrestle better and that shows signs of improvement," McComish added. "Again it comes down to working on the moves that we go over and over in practice and sometimes it seems that we forget those. But we have to keep drilling those moves. Yes, this is our second meet and I expect mistakes, but we have to keep getting better."

McComish was happy that his team won its meet Thursday, but knows that they can't slow down.

"We have to keep getting better," McComish said. "We can't be pleased with our performance. We have to keep getting better and we are."
