Gun thief gets five years

GREENCASTLE -- A Poland man received a five-year sentence Thursday in Putnam County Circuit Court.

Judge Matthew Headley ordered that Bobby Forey, 20 -- who also uses the surname Standifer -- would execute four years of that sentence: Three years at the Department of Corrections and one year on home detention. The last year of Forey's sentence will be spent on probation.

Forey was charged with Class B felony burglary and Class D felony theft in connection with an April incident in which two rifles and a shotgun were taken from a home in Reelsville. The firearms were reported missing on April 22.

A warrant for Forey's arrest was issued on July 28. He was booked into the Putnam County Jail two days later, and has been there ever since, unable to post 10 percent of the $30,000 bond set by Headley.

Forey will receive credit for the time he has spent in jail.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, Forey pled guilty to a Class C felony count of burglary.

Headley could have given Forey up to an eight-year sentence.

Forey's victim said he and his wife were not home at the time of the burglary. The victim found out after he returned home from work that the guns had gone missing.

Forey took the guns from a locked room in the victim's house, cutting the screen from the outside to gain entrance, court documents said. Partial shoeprints and latent fingerprints were lifted from the crime scene, and positively indicated that Forey had been there.

When he was first questioned about the Reelsville burglary, Forey was already in jail in Owen County on an unrelated charge.

Forey's Putnam County criminal history includes 2008 convictions for misdemeanor reckless driving and driving while suspended.

  • Latent prints...that sounds like a TV show
