GREENCASTLE -- With unemployment in Indiana reaching double digits, the Putnam County Community Foundation reported friends and neighbors in Putnam County are in need of help.

"People volunteering at our food pantries are telling us they have never seen the need so great." said Elaine Peck, executive director.

Peck stated the Putnam County Relief Fund is currently depleted.

The Relief Fund was established at the Community Foundation in 2008 so people wishing to help Putnam County citizens needing temporary assistance due to economic conditions would have a simple way to contribute.

Grants from the fund support charitable organizations providing food, shelter, health care, utility assistance, and job re-training to Putnam County residents.

In addition, Peck stated contributions to the fund are needed and that new contributions will be matched dollar for dollar by the Brookshire Family Fund.

Contributions may be made payable to the Putnam County Community Foundation for the purpose of the Putnam County Relief Fund and mailed to: 2 S. Jackson St., Greencastle, IN 46135.

The Putnam County Community Foundation is a nonprofit public charity established in 1985 to administer endowments, award grants and provide leadership, enriching the quality of life and strengthening community in Putnam County.

The community foundation administers nearly 200 funds and endowments for donors, supporting a variety of charitable purposes.
