Software benefits senior drivers

INDIANAPOLIS -- Joan Basswood has been worried about her driving skills since turning 70.

"I didn't want to give up driving, but I know the statistics aren't good for people as they get older. I don't want to be the cause of an accident and I certainly didn't want to be in one," said the Coatesville resident.

Basswood feels much more relaxed about driving since she has been using a software program called DriveSharp that helps improve reaction time, reduces crash risk and increases control in most driving conditions.

"It's like playing one of my grandson's video games," said Basswood, who got the software program from AAA Hoosier Motor Club.

DriveSharp consists of two computer exercises that improve reaction time, visual processing speed and driving ability. The technology has been extensively validated in studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and in leading science and medical journals.

The technology has been shown in studies to cut crash risk in half, to improve stopping distance by up to 22 feet at 55 miles per hour and to assist drivers in maintaining their driving skills as they age.

"I bought it from the Motor Club for $69. I heard about it from one of my friends who helped test it. It's been worth the money for the peace of mind," she explained.

"Part of making our nation's roads safer is helping mature drivers who wish to stay active -- a quickly growing population -- maintain or improve their driving safety," said AAA Foundation CEO Peter Kissinger in AAA's newsletter.

"We are very excited to partner with Posit Science in bringing this unique technology to everyone looking for ways to take more control over their safety on the road."

Posit Science is a leading provider of scientifically proven brain fitness software. It works with more than 50 scientists from prestigious universities to design and test programs. According to Greg Seiter, AAA Hoosier Motor Club Public Affairs Manager, studies have shown that an average of 10 hours training help people drive longer and safer.

"I just know I'm willing to try anything that helps me be able to drive safely and for a longer time. I like my freedom," said Basswood.
