Clovers begin new year with loss
CLOVERDALE -- 2010 started out a little rough for the Lady Clovers on Monday when they dropped a 67-36 decision to Clay City.
Cloverdale kept it competitive in the first quarter, staying within a few points of the Lady Eels and only trailed by eight, 18-10, at the start of the second quarter. After that it was a whole other story.
Clay City became aggressive in the second frame defensively, pressing the ball and trapping the Lady Clovers' point, forcing them to turn it over.
Cloverdale had nine turnovers in the second quarter alone and was only able to get off eight shots, making only three.
Offensively, Clay City wasn't much better. However, they crashed the boards on missed shots and scored on the second chance. Clay City outscored the Lady Clovers 20-7 in the second quarter.
After the game, CHS head coach Tom Anderson said the loss came down to two things -- rebounding and positioning.
"Turnovers and lack of rebounding -- out of the 38 points they scored in the first half, I am willing to bet that over half of them came from second chance shots off of offensive rebounds," Anderson said. "And rebounding is about position and effort and we didn't have any at all tonight."
By the end of the night, Cloverdale turned the ball over 28 times compared to the 12 turnovers the Lady Eels had committed.
The start of the second half proved to be a little more productive for Cloverdale as it was finally able to connect from downtown three times. Unfortunately, those were the only times they could connect with the basket. Nine of the Lady Clovers' 10 points came from behind the three-point line. Cloverdale shot 21 percent from the floor in the third quarter on 3-of-14 shooting.
"We are just not a good shooting team at this point in the season," Anderson said. "But we are working at it and making some progress."
The final quarter wasn't any prettier for Cloverdale as it went 2-for-12 from the field, but did hit 66 percent of their free throws on 4-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe.
For Clay City, the final quarter was just as appealing as the other three. All they had to do was trap the ball, wait for the turnover, score on the transition and wait for the final buzzer.
"We just didn't have any effort out there tonight," Anderson said.
Cloverdale is now 2-12 on the season and are back in action on Monday when it host West Vigo with the JV tipping off at 6 p.m.
