North Putnam chews up Eels

ROACHDALE -- It was as simple as catch and release.

North Putnam shot 43 percent from the floor and had three players in double digits Saturday as the Lady Cougars knocked off Eminence 59-31 in the first game back since December.

"This was a good win for us," NPHS coach Jim Brothers said. "It was a good team win."

At the start of the game, it looked as if the smaller and younger Eminence team was going to give the Lady Cougars a run for their money, holding them to only eight points. But a break out performance from Samantha Lucas in the second quarter paced the Lady Cougar offense back to where it needed to be. Lucas put up six of her 10 points in the second frame with a dominating performance inside the post.

"Sam has come a long way and she did a great job for us today and the rest of the team did a wonderful job a finding her as well," Brothers said.

At the half, North Putnam led 23-14. By the end of the third frame they led 45-24.

"The first half we were a bit rusty," Brother said. "This was our first game back since Dec. 18. In the second half we played much better and got back into the flow of things."

In the third quarter, North Putnam converted 10 of its 14 shots and shot 67 percent from downtown to outscore the Lady Eels 22-10. The Lady Cougars carried their momentum from the third into the fourth, outscoring Eminence 14-7 for the final.

Defensively, North Putnam held the Lady Eels to only nine field goals for the entire game while shutting them out completely in the second quarter. All six of the Lady Eels' second quarter points came from the charity stripe.

"I was really pleased with our defense today," Brothers said. "They only had nine field goals for the entire game and most of those came when the junior varsity players were in. And that's because they are still new to all of this.

"This was a good win for us after such a long layoff," Brothers added.

Outside of Lucas, Megan Robinson and Dakota Malayer were in double digits. Robinson had 10 while Malayer led the team with 13.

North Putnam is now 3-7 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Western Boone to battle with the Stars with the JV tipping off at 6 p.m.
