Bernhardt commends staff
GREENCASTLE -- The homicide on Jan. 13 caused South Putnam School Corporation to place its schools on lockdown.
Superintendent Bruce Bernhardt said the staff performed excellent in the difficult situation.
"I want to give a big thank you to the staff at Reelsville (Elementary) for the way they performed," he said during the school board meeting Tuesday.
The students remained calm even though there were police officers present in the hallways. The schools hold drills throughout the school year for these types of situations and the students reacted as if it were just another drill, Bernhardt said.
In other business:
* All South Putnam schools have received Promethean boards, which are a version of the Smart boards.
In addition, new staff computers have been received and are starting to be put in classrooms. New lab computers have also been ordered and should be delivered during February.
* School board member Steve Cash gave a thank you to all involved with the Fillmore ball game. He also said another legislation update will be held Feb. 20.
* The high school has received its new high-efficiency boiler. It should save the corporation on cost of natural gas, Bernhardt said.
* The personnel report was approved as follows:
Resignations -- Anne Marie Bunton as part-time food services at high school effective Dec. 18, 2009; and Lisa Fernandez as part-time instructional assistant at Fillmore effective Jan. 14.
New hires -- Mildred Watts as part-time food services at high school; Lance Griffith as custodian at the high school; and Robert Butler as 10-month custodian at the high school.
Bernhardt told board members no new positions have been created; they are replacement personnel.
* The 2010-2011 school year calendar was approved. The area superintendents meet and discuss calendars together, Bernhardt explained. While they are not exactly the same, they are close in starting, ending and vacation dates.
