How you can help with the tragedy in Haiti

Friday, January 29, 2010

To the Editor:

On Jan. 12, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti causing catastrophic damage and loss of life. The American Red Cross is currently responding to this tragic event with what is needed most---financial assistance.

There are several ways you can help locally. You may call 1-800-REDCROSS, text "Haiti" to 90999 for a $10.00 contribution added to your phone bill, or visit www.redcross.org. In addition on a local level, an account has been established at all branches of Old National Bank for Red Cross Haiti relief, or you may mail your donation to PO Box 793, Greencastle IN 46135. Also, Red Cross canisters have been placed throughout the county for small change donations. They are located in Fillmore at Hoosier Pete or Bert and Betty's Kitchen, In Bainbridge at Country Mart and Bon Ton Diner, in Cloverdale at I-70 Truck Stop and Casey's, in Greencastle at Marathon Station (Jct 40 & 231), McClures, Monicals Pizza, Alex Bowling, Putnam Inn, Tractor Supply and Fairway Family Restaurant, and in New Maysville at Hunt Brothers. Thank you to Caseys in Roachdale and Gas America in Greencastle for previous participation that is now concluded.

The International Red Cross which includes qualified American Red Cross volunteers still have staff working in the tsunami stricken region of the world, assisting with building hospitals, schools and putting back together lives torn apart from disaster. We can be assured that the Red Cross will remain in Haiti for several years to come fulfilling the same tasks for the victims of Haiti, and your donations will not only help with immediate relief, but with the rebuilding of shattered lives.
