Red Cross seeks donations for chili day

Red Cross Director Kathie Skeel looks over silent auction items at last year's Red Cross Chili supper. The group is looking for donations for this year's event.

GREENCASTLE -- Donations of silent auction items are needed for the annual Red Cross Chili supper on Feb. 26. All proceeds from this event benefit the Putnam County Unit of the Wabash Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The silent auction last year offered items such as sports memorabilia, a Tony Dungy signature hat and Purdue autographed keepsakes; Hoosier Lottery $100 ticket basket; and family fun getaways, including passes to Holiday World, Caribbean Cove and Indiana Beach.

Event co-chairwomen Kathie Skeel and Cindy Schrader are hoping to get similar donations from the community this year.

"All money raised from this event is used to help Putnam County fire victims. Home fires are the disasters which the chapter responds to somewhere in the Wabash Valley almost every other day. Please help change a life for someone in need," said Skeel.

Several local organizations contribute to the success of the event every year. The Waters of Greencastle provides the chili and cornbread, Delta Theta Tau makes all the desserts, and the Putnam Inn furnishes drinks.

Local disc jockey Mike Welsh of Sounds Unlimited donates his time and musical talents to entertain folks for the evening.

Putnam County emergency management personnel will give demonstrations and provide information at booths. The Greencastle City Police have car seat safety information. The Greencastle Fire Department provides smoke detector instructions and their mascot Sparky is always one of the highlights of the night. Operation Life will also be present.

A free will offering is taken at the door. The event runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Greencastle National Guard Armory.

Anyone wishing to donate silent auction items can contact Skeel at 653-6616 or Schrader at 317-441-9316.
