Central Elementary students take on teachers

Saturday, January 30, 2010
Students and teachers at Central Elementary squared off Friday in a game of dodgeball. Students, by grade, battled teachers and principal Debbie Steffy to see who was best at dodging the ball. More important than bragging rights, it was to help raise money for the school.

GREENCASTLE -- The cheers could be heard before entering the school's gymnasium -- they filled the building with excitement.

It's a student's dream -- throwing a ball at a teacher and principal. That dream came true for students at Central Elementary Friday afternoon as the students took on the teachers in dodgeball.

As a fundraiser for the student council, students purchased tickets at 25 cents each for the chance to see who was the best at dodging the ball. Students were chosen by grade level to compete against their teachers and principal, Debbie Steffy.

The competition was fierce.

But more importantly, it was all for fun.

"It's a great way to get through the dreary winter days," said Betty McGill.

McGill and Amy Cassida sponsor the student council, which is made up of fifth and sixth grade students. The group has raised money for Riley and its school.

McGill said the council would be sponsoring Fabulous Friday during the month of February. A theme has been chosen for each Friday in February. Themes will include pajama day, clash day and bring a stuffed animal to school.

To participate in some of the themes, it will cost students $1. The proceeds will benefit Riley.

In Friday's dodgeball tournament, the money raised will help fund the attendance contest. The classroom with the most weeks of good attendance will receive a prize at the end of the school year.

  • I wish we did this when I was in school! I would have a special dodgeball just for Mr. Cook at Bainbridge Elementary.
