GREENCASTLE -- The Mary Allison Children's Trust makes it possible for students at local schools to have gym shoes, winter clothing, medicine and glasses. Thanks to the members committee at Gobin United Methodist Church, the fund will have an additional $1,007 to work with this year.

The donation was presented to board members of the Mary Allison Fund on Tuesday morning.

"In these times of hardship, I'm proud of the members of Gobin United Methodist Church that they continue with their mission work," said Barb Rice, chairperson of the church's members committee.

Gobin makes quarterly donations to various organizations from its members committee fund.

"This quarter it went to the Mary Allison Fund," said Joe Ferguson, vice president of the Mary Allison Trust board.

Since 1896, local Putnam County children have benefited from the Mary Allison Children Trust.

"Students at all nine county schools receive help from the fund. Sometimes it's clothing or glasses, often it's medicine. It all depends on the circumstances," explained Mary Allison board member and treasurer Ginger Scott.

The Mary Allison Children's Trust came about from the sale of the Mary Allison Children's Home, established in 1912 to house disadvantaged children.

The home was closed due the declining number of Putnam County children and teenagers residing at the orphanage. It was sold in the mid-1980 and the trust was created.

This fund provides financial assistance toward health care, education and welfare for underprivileged children in Putnam County when all other resources have been exhausted.

A sum of $1,000 is given annually to each of the nine Putnam County elementary schools. Teachers and counselors at each school determine how the money is spent on an immediate basis.

The funds are unrestricted, meaning school officials can use them for any purpose, as long as it benefits the students.

"The goal of the board of directors of the Mary Allison Children's Trust is to provide funding necessary to continue the legacy of Mary Allison in improving lives of the children in Putnam County," said Scott.

Contributions can be sent to the Mary Allison Children's Trust, P.O. Box 369, Greencastle, IN 46135. For more information, call Scott at 655-2333 or 522-0507 or email her at gscott@wabashcapital.com.
