CHS falls to Mounties

CLOVERDALE -- A late game surge came up short for the Cloverdale boys' team Saturday, as they fell to Southmont 69-60. The Clovers fell behind early following a 7-of-14 three-point shooting performance from the Mounties in the first half and were never able to recover.

Southmont jumped out to a 13-5 lead, but some hot shooting from Jason Salter gave Cloverdale a 16-15 lead after one quarter. Salter put up six points in the first quarter, with Kevin Dean adding five of his own.

The second quarter was a different for the Clovers.

Southmont continued its hot shooting in the second quarter, with Trent Murray and Austin Burton going 4-of-5 from three-point range and regained the lead and went into the half leading 34-26.

Following a third quarter where the Clovers were outscored 17-9, Cloverdale entered the final stanza down 16 points, but saved their best for last.

In the fourth quarter, Cloverdale went on a late charge and trimmed the Southmont lead to single digits.

Cloverdale went on a 9-0 run midway through the quarter to cut the lead to nine, but the Mounties were able to hold their lead and come away with the victory.

Brandon Moon and Jacob Clark led the way for the Clovers in the final quarter with 10 points each. Moon scored 18 points overall to lead the Clovers, with Salter adding 16 points and Clark 12. Dean scored six points, while Jordan Hayden chipped in five points, Chuck Strunk two and Mitch Williams one point in the loss.

Cloverdale will host Edgewood Thursday, with the junior varsity tipping at 6 p.m.
