SP students have trouble getting home Tuesday

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- South Putnam Community School students had a tough time getting home on buses Tuesday afternoon.

"We had four buses get stuck and have to be towed out of snow drifts," reported School Superintendent Bruce Bernhardt at the South Putnam Community School board meeting Tuesday night.

"They didn't go off the road, they just got stuck in snow drifting across the roads, especially in the Belle Union area. There has been so much snow already pushed to the side of the road that it is blowing across those high mounds and creating much deeper drifts," said Bernhardt.

There were not very many students on the buses and parents were kept informed of the incidents. Other students were late getting home due to the poor condition of the roads, which slowed down buses.

"Our bus drivers have done a great job getting around, and many parents have been a lot of help. Some have had to bring their kids out to an area where the buses could pick them up," added Bernhardt.

"We're keeping a close eye on it. It's snowing again now. I'll be talking to the transportation people early tomorrow morning. The highway department just can't keep up with the snow and wind, especially in areas like Belle Union and south of Reelsville," said Bernhardt.

Board members approved applications by the school corporation for two summer school classes.

"If we have enough students, and I think that number is 15 students, and then we will offer a high school English and math class," said Bernhardt. "We have to apply now to hold the classes."

Bernhardt also gave an update on technology in the school corporation, saying that progress was being made.

"A lot of the staff computers are done and the lab computers are all ready to go into the lab. They will go a lot faster because we have software that lets us get them up all at once," explained Bernhardt.

There are some issues with power fluctuations, network configurations and phone issues, but they are being worked through.

"We're very pleased with the efforts our technology people have made," said Bernhardt.

Board member Steve Cash reminded the group that the last legislative update at the Farm Bureau will be this Saturday at 8 a.m.

"We'll find out Saturday what has come out and what's going on and can address things then. If the education bills haven't been heard by next week, they are not going anywhere," said Cash.

The board also approved the following personnel changes: the resignation of Andrea Minor as Jr. High girls track coach, new hire of Leanne Singh at Fillmore Elementary as a part-time instructional assistant and the hiring of Jr. High Girl's Track Coach Brandon Welti and High School Asst. Swim Coach Adam Wishart.

  • The roads in Belle Union are terrible!!! If my child got stuck on a bus watch out there would be trouble. We should not be putting safety of our childrens lives or even the bus drivers lives over EDUCATION!!! Cancel and make the days up! Once again we are on 2 hr delay again lets see what happens today more stuck buses. Also county get your butt in gear and get out here to Belle union!!!!!!!!

  • Hey coltsfan---first of all, I am not a county snow plow driver, I do not drive a school bus and I do not even live in the Belle Union area---but I do live in an area of the county less populated. The trucks can't be every where at once. Maybe you need to ride with one of the snow plow drivers and see what they are up against. I am sure they would love to be in their nice warm homes watching the snow fall and blow, but they are out doing a job. Give them some slack! If they think the bus can't get through, get in your car and take your kids to school. Two hour delays are better than being out and making it up in June. Ask your kids!

So you're saying they should go to school at all costs?

  • I First of all I want to start this off by thanking the men and women behind the plows. I know you guys are very tired and have worked long hours in some very bad conditions!!!!! THANK YOU!

You have to remember this is the job you chose so please don't be hateful. I am thankful you are doing this!! Now let's get to the issue of education and safety. I drive this area every day and last night was absolutely insane. It took me 35 mins from 40 to get to the church and I am in a 4x4. These roads were very dangerous last night and this morning.

I would rather my child have to make up a few days in June than have there lives at risk. As for asking the kids what they would rather do.... I will tell you this, my child got off the school bus yesterday in tears. Please tell me this is worth it. The road I live on has seen a snow plow but one time this year. I called the Putnam county hwy department to ask why and was told we are out of money and will only be working on the main roads. Please tell me how and why the people who live on main roads tax money is better than mine? Wheel tax..... This goes to pave roads that have been paved over and over and over again. I still live on a gravel road please just pave it once!!! Or better yet PUT GRAVEL ON IT!!! The safety of our kids is the issue here and I can not believe this. I also should not have to meet this school bus in a different location to get my kid on the bus.... My taxes pay for them to pick them up.

If the county HWY Department is in that big of a money bind I would suggest a BAKE SALE.....

  • Fallgirl09 I totally agree with u!!

interested party= I took my kid to school yesterday so don't worry about that. I didn't decide to work for the HWY department so that is not my job that is there JOB! YOUR QUOTE Maybe you need to ride with one of the snow plow drivers and see what they are up against. I am sure they would love to be in their nice warm homes watching the snow fall and blow, but they are out doing a job! AT LEAST THEY HAVE A JOB and they knew this signing up to work for this department!! Two hour delays are better than being out and making it up in June. Ask your kids! It is not up to my kids as a parent I would pick June then one of these kids getting hurt!!

exhoosier2 I think they shouldv'e cancelled school yesterday and not in danger the lives of our children and bus drivers. I feel sorry for the bus drivers. I think CLOVERDALE was the smart one yesterday!!

  • Yesterday (Tues) at noon one snow plow was off the road in a ditch east of Belle Union, still sitting in his truck and right acrossed the road was another plow sitting in his truck watching. maybe the second driver should have been plowing the area and still checking on his buddy from time to time.

All the children on our road were asked to walk to CR 1000 to catch the bus. At least this way they were not stuck in the snow like they were twice last week.

  • Fully agree! Think of these kids' and bus drivers' LIVES! Who cares if they are making it up in June or July or August?? They're alive and safe. Too many people are worried about when they have to make it up instead of safety. Give it up and think about safety for all involved. And what about the high schoolers that are driving to school in this? Many parents won't take control and tell them they can't drive under these conditions... Example, ASK YOUR KIDS??? Are you kidding me?? Kids are just that, kids.

  • THANK U BANNERSTUFF!!!! I 100% agree with u!!

BUSYMOM48 I agree with u too! The kids should not have to walk to the end of the road to catch the bus. U pay taxes for your kids to get picked up!!

I'm glad other people feel the same way as I do as well as other parents that I know!!!

  • Thank you Mr. Bernhardt and Steve Cash for keeping us in the loop.

Thank you to all the bus drivers (Isis Earnest in

particular) for keeping our children safe.

Attention: Complaining parents! Get off your duff,

...get your children to where the bus can pick

    them up.

"Attention: Complaining parents! Get off your duff,

Please do not suggest I that I am Lazy person. Let's talk "get off your duff"

Did it occur that people work? In order to pay taxes so our schools can have buses and that the county works can have JOBS. I hold a job and I am required to be there before school starts. As getting off my duff I have put my job in jeopardy in order to get my child to the BUS safely!!! Have you or the school put your job at risk so your kid can have an education that is worth there LIFE?

. I am very thankful for the bus drivers as well (not a job I could do) as far as I know bus drivers are not the

Mr. Bernhardt.... When you decided school was a go did you just drive down 231 and 40...

Please in the future take some of these roads 425W 425E 400S any road off of Bell Union Road!

  • To fallgirl09,I'm curious who at the Putnam County Highway Dept. told you the county was broke-money has nothing to do with plowing snow and trying to open roads that drift back shut......salt and sand are the real costs...did you get a name of the person you were talking with? Just curious..
