IMPD names Greencastle native assistant chief of police

Saturday, February 27, 2010

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has appointed Darryl Pierce assistant chief of police.

Pierce was born, raised and educated in Greencastle. He graduated from Greencastle High School, where he played basketball, football, and baseball, in May of 1969.

Upon graduation, he attended Indiana University, studying secondary education. He moved to Indianapolis in 1973 and began his career with the Indianapolis Police Department in May of 1980.

He has been promoted several times during his 30 years with the department. Pierce has served on the Chief of Police's Executive Staff for the last 10 years, and most recently served as the commander of the Downtown District since June 2007.

In addition, he has served in positions in such areas as narcotics, internal affairs, prosecutor's office, criminal investigations and human resources.

Pierce is also a graduate of the 170th Class of the FBI National Academy Associates and an Instructor certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board. He is a recipient of Indianapolis Police Department's Medal of Bravery Award and Merit Award; American Red Cross Hall of Fame Award; and RTV6 Leadership Award.

In October 2009, Darryl applied for the position of public safety director (which oversees the police and fire departments, as well as emergency management) and was selected by the nine-member search committee as one of the four finalists out of 125 applicants nationwide.

His new appointment as assistant chief of police was made by newly appointed public safety director Frank Straub.

Pierce said this is a very humbling experience for him; however, he looks forward to the challenges, to helping move the department forward, and working with the communities.

  • I went to school with Darryl. One of the nicest people you would ever know. He came to GHS to talk to students a few years back. I had a chance to eat lunch with him. He was the same person with whom I went to school. I am proud for Darryl and wish him the best of luck.
