DePauw finds early success on diamonds

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- DePauw split its two games Sunday with a 6-2 win over Maryville (Tenn.) and a 2-0 loss to Transylvania. The Tigers are now 3-1 on the season.

Maryville took a 2-0 lead in the third as Haley Johnson drove in Ashlan Cosner with a double and then scored on Lindsy Little's single. The Tigers cut the lead in half when Rachel MacBeth singled and scored when Brianne Weeks reached on an error.

Amy Hallett and Cymone Allen each reached on singles in the fifth before MacBeth advanced each with a sacrifice bunt. Weeks singled home Hallett which tied the game at 2-2. After Weeks stole second, Emma Minx reached on an error scoring Allen. Minx stole second before Jen Kosinski singled in Weeks and Minx. Holly Paris plated Kosinski with a double.

Kosinski and Allen each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while Johnson and Little had two each of the Scots' six. Megan Soultz improved to 3-0 with five strikeouts and no walks. Jessica McCarter dropped to 0-3 with the loss.

In the second game, Transylvania scored one each in the third and sixth innings. Michelle Ladanyi singles in Anne Broadhead in the third, while Danielle Smith's pinch-hit, bunt single in the sixth brought home pinch-runner Haleigh LeCompte.

MacBeth and Ashlee Anton each had two of DePauw's five hits, while Broadhead and Megan Mitchell had two apiece of the Pioneers' eight hits. Soultz dropped to 3-1, while Kendra DeArk picked up the win.

The women opened the season on Saturday with a pair of shutout wins over the same two opponents. The Tigers topped Maryville by a 3-0 score and then beat Transylvania, 4-0.

In the third, Weeks led off with a bunt single and stole second. She scored when Paris reached on an error. The Tigers added two more in the seventh as Allen led off with a single and moved to second on MacBeth's sacrifice bunt. Allen scored when Weeks reached on an error before Kosinski singled home Weeks.

Weeks and Allen each had two of DePauw's nine hits, while seven different Scots had one hit apiece. Soultz recorded the shutout and struck out five with just one walk. Sarah Reeder suffered the loss for the Scots as they dropped to 0-5.

In the Transylvania win, MacBeth led off the first with a double and scored on Kosinski's single. Hallett led off the second with a single and advanced to second on an error. Anton's sacrifice bunt moved both runners up one base and Allen plated Hallett with a single. Allen later scored from third as part of a double steal. The Tigers added an unearned run in the seventh.

MacBeth and Kosinski each had two of DePauw's six hits, while Mitchell collected the only hit off of Soultz. With the one-hitter, Soultz moved her career mark to 86-18 with 40 shutouts. Kendra suffered the loss for the Pioneers.

DePauw travels to Centre College, March 13-14, where it will face Hiram and John Carroll.

Baseball

GREENCASTLE -- DePauw scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to break open a close game and top visiting Earlham, 11-3 on Sunday. The game was Earlham's season opener. Game two was called due to rain.

Earlham jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jake Carr's fielder's choice scored Andrew Morrical who led off the inning with a double. DePauw countered with three in the bottom of the first as Rob McPike doubled home Alex Jacques. Sam Linette then grounded out which scored Jon Newman. .Jason Cohen singled in McPike with the third run.

Cohen doubled home McPike in the third to make it 4-1, but the Quakers added one in the fourth as Russ Yoho singled home Chris Baumann In the fifth Morrical singled to short, moved to second on Tyler Schroeder's sacrifice bunt and scored on Corey Murray's single to center.

In the sixth, DePauw scored all seven of its runs with two out. With Jacques on second, Newmand singled Jacques home before McPike and Linette hit back-to-back triples. Murray replaced Adam Painter on the mound with Linette scoring on a wild pitch.

Cohen doubled and Drew Holy walked and both scored on Alex Wright's double. Chris Forbringer wrapped up the scoring with the inning's third triple which plated Wright.

DePauw totaled 13 hits paced by McPike, Cohen and Forbringer with three each. Morrical and Schroeder each had two of Earlham's nine hits.

Brad Gerlach improved to 1-0 after striking out six and walking just one in five innings. Joseph Wojda picked up the save with two innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts. Painter dropped to 0-1 with the loss.

DePauw swept Illinois Wesleyan in Saturday a doubleheader with the games played at Washington University. The Tigers won the opener by a 4-1 score and took the nightcap 7-6 in 10 innings.

DePauw hosts Alma on Saturday, March 13, in a Noon doubleheader.
