Identity of body found in Vigo Co. confirmed as Brazil man

VIGO COUNTY--A body discovered by a person walking in the wooded area in rural northeastern Vigo County at approximately 1:40 p.m. Sunday has been identified as a Brazil man.

Officials confirmed Tuesday the remains of Charles Raymond Chumley Jr., 30, was found clothed and partially decomposed in a wooded area. The land is adjacent to 11236 Grotto Ave., approximately 1.8 miles north of United States 40 on the Clay/Vigo county line.

Chumley was reported missing Tuesday, Dec. 10, by his wife Jennifer Chumley. His body was discovered approximately one mile from where he was initially reported missing.

On Dec. 8, around 11:45 p.m., Chumley told authorities her husband left her in a vehicle in the driveway of a family member's home located at 11300 East Davis Avenue in the Seelyville area and walked into a nearby wooded area. She said her husband told her that he would return in 15 minutes.

However, he never returned and officials confirmed he had not contacted any family members since.

Chumley was described as being 5-feet-11-inches and 185 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. He was last seen wearing brown coveralls and a blue jacket.

Authorities confirmed to The Brazil Times a helicopter search of the surrounding area was unsuccessful in locating any trace of Chumley.

On Monday, Clay County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr performed the preliminary autopsy at Terre Haute Regional Hospital and dental records were sent to Indianapolis to help with the identification process.

Officials confirmed the identity of the remains were Chumley late Tuesday afternoon.

However, no cause of death has been determined in the case. Officials added the results of toxicology tests could take up to two weeks.
