Going Green

Morris Taylor gets his beard sprayed green by Wal-Mart beauticians Amy Sparks and Cara Wade Tuesday. The beauty shop helps Taylor with his beard every year in time for his annual romp as Putnam County's Shamrock man.

Taylor makes St. Patrick's day fun

GREENCASTLE -- Morris Taylor wanted to be a clown but never had the nerve to pursue his dream. For the past five years, he has found an outlet on St. Patrick's Day for clowning around.

Every March he dons his green shoes and hat; goes to the beauty salon at Wal-Mart and has his beard turned green; then he spreads good luck all over Greencastle.

"I take pictures with people and just act crazy," he laughed. "My kids tell me I'm crazy every year, but I do it anyway."

This year he has added a new hat. In the past he has worn a big old Stetson that he bought in 1955 in Anchorage. He had painted it green and molded it into a hillbilly shape.

His new hat is emerald green with a cocky little feather stuck in the side.

His shoes match his beard and even his cane gets a swatch of green.

He usually spends most of the afternoon after dying his beard walking around Wal-mart chatting with customers and having his picture taken.

"I meet an awful lot of people and it's nice to make them smile," he noted.
