Jim H. "Smitty" Smith, 76, of Greencastle died Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Born May 31, 1933 in Bainbridge, the son of Roy D. and Bernice Jones Smith-Rady, he was a 1951 graduate of the Greencastle High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On March 1, 1954 he married Marie Thompson and she survives. The couple recently observed their 56th wedding anniversary.

Smitty was a former Greencastle Police officer, dairy farmer for 25 years, firearms instructor for the Putnamville Correctional Facility and the house dad for the Alpha Phi sorority at DePauw University. His memberships include Brick Chapel United Methodist Church, American Legion, Moose Lodge and the Rifleman's Association

Survivors include his wife; daughter Jeri Ross and husband Brad of Fillmore; sons Jim D. Smith and wife Brenda of Bainbridge and Ron Smith and wife Becky of Greencastle; grandchildren Ashley Ross, Sarah Hackworth, Nikki Smith, Aaron Smith and Ryan Smith; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents and one sister preceded him in death.

Private family services will be held Wednesday at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Brick Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
