Arrests made in shooting case

GREENCASTLE -- Three people have been arrested in connection with a Tuesday morning shooting incident in Greencastle.

Justin Hargrove 24, of Greencastle, has been charged with attempted murder and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon; Michael Pryor, 18, of Coatesville has been charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon; and Lacey Couch, 23, of Greencastle has been charged with resisting law enforcement, assisting a criminal and child neglect, Greencastle Police Department Chief Tom Sutherlin said.

Couch was the driver of the vehicle.

Two other people are being considered persons of interest in the case, but no charges have been filed.

Sutherlin intimated that drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the incident.

Sutherlin said it should be noted that all charges are preliminary charges, and that information will now be forwarded to the Putnam County Prosecutor's Office.

The original call in the case came in as "shots fired" at about 1:41 a.m. Several calls came in to dispatch around that time from Columbia and West Walnut streets and Rockville Road.

"Reporting parties advised dispatch of approximately four to six shots being fired, and that the shots sounded like a high-powered rifle," Greencastle Police Department Chief Tom Sutherlin said.

Marian Abowitz, who lives near one of the places where shots were reported, said she was awakened by the sound of shots between 1 and 1:30 a.m. The sound also woke her dog, who "went ballistic."

Michael Pryor

"I heard a pop, pop, pop, pop, pop," she said. "It happened so many times that I knew it wasn't just a car."

Three or four minutes later, Abowitz said, she heard the same sound, but it was further down Walnut Street. She then heard it again a couple of minutes later, but it was further away yet and "almost imperceptible."

"It didn't occur to me to call the police," she said. "I figured it was just some kids on a crazy, stupid joyride. I thought they were probably just firing at signs or mailboxes."

Witnesses told officers the shooter was a passenger in a dark-colored car, possibly green, and that the vehicle had four doors.

At 1:49 a.m., dispatch received a call from an individual in the area of Washington and Madison streets that said they had heard four to six shots fired and had seen a green vehicle leave the area at a high rate of speed.

At about 2:06 a.m., Putnam County Sheriff's Department Reserve Deputy Matt Biggs saw a vehicle matching the description of the shooter's vehicle at the intersection of Bloomington and Washington streets. Biggs began driving behind the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop at the intersection of Franklin and Durham streets.

"Biggs advised that the passenger exited the suspect vehicle and fired approximately two or three rounds at his police vehicle," Sutherlin said. "Biggs advised that one round struck the police vehicle's hood and ricocheted into the windshield."

Biggs was not injured. He confirmed that the weapon the suspect used was a rifle, Sutherlin said.

After the suspect shot at Biggs, a vehicle pursuit ensued eastbound on Franklin Street and then north on Arlington Street. Biggs lost sight of the suspect vehicle, but at the intersection of Cameron and Arlington streets he observed what he believed to be the same suspect that had fired at his vehicle running on foot. Biggs chased the suspect on foot for a short distance before losing sight of him, Sutherlin said.

Police set up a mobile command unit in the parking lot of the National Guard Armory on Arlington Street. They worked from that location until about 7 a.m., Sutherlin said.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Putnam County 911 Dispatch Center at 653-5115 or the Greencastle Police Department at 653-2925.

Greencastle Schools were originally on a two-hour delay. At about 9 a.m., officials made the decision to cancel classes for the day.

  • GC Schools are now closed for today, according to the message I received.

  • You shoot at the police, you need to expect some rounds to come back at you.

Sounds like a ride shooting at signs as gone awry. They need to deal with the consequences.

  • Person of interest being questioned in shooting???

Nowhere in the article says someone is being questioned except in your headline. So are they talking to someone who may know what is going on????

First off I commend Reserve Deputy Matt Biggs for being by him self and Pulling over the Vehicle given the circumstances of it being involved in discharge of a Firearm. Scary situation to be sure, not knowing what your up against and I am glad he was not injured or worse. I wonder if he was able to get a Plate ID on the Vehicle.

And shooting a Rifle within City Limits with the potential to do some real harm to some one, these Shooters need to be dealt with Severely!!

Keep up the Good Work Greencastle Police Department and Putnam County Sheriff's Department, I hope you catch these criminals and put them away for a while. In my Book, NO One shoots at a Law Enforcement Officer and gets away with it.

  • Person of interest being questioned in shooting? so could you mention something about the title of this article in the write up ?

-- Posted by JrsWife on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 10:11 AM
  • The first line of the piece says they have someone of interest they are questioning. More information about it would be great, but it was in the article.

  • I watched Fox 59 this morning and from their report and from this report, I note that no license plate number was obtained. If the police officer was following these individuals, I would suspect that the first thing he should have done was get a plate ID; oh never mind, he wasn't followinig him for a DUI, just random gun fire. (And, for those out there who think I have had a DUI, you are wrong - I have not - I have just noticed that over the last several years crimes are not solved in this town/county & that basically the only arrests that are made are for DUI's; you can rob banks, stalk, be in contempt of court orders, etc. & not get arrested or even looked for; but have 1 drink & drive & you're put under the jail.)

  • Overit, you make yourself sound pretty ignorant with the way you express yourself. All i can say is if you weren't there, you don't know what really went down, the media is not exact on their reports, second of all, if you think you can do better, become a cop and do it right, thirdly, who cares what they catch people doing, as long as it is against the law, they are doing their jobs.

    -- Posted by magoo55 on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 11:19 AM
  • Here is an idea....let's think about what is involved in an invesitgation. Would it be a good idea, if the vehicle had not been found to alert everyone to the fact that they had the plate number? Maybe, maybe not. Until you walk a mile in the shoes of the law enforcement officers, back down. They put their lives on the line to protect us and they deserve our appreciation.

  • I love Putnam County have lived here all my life but this just shows how untrue rumors start. REREAD the article people, before you make comments. MIKE BIGGS not Matt responded and they have the FULL description of the vehicle. Also don't understand how you could "think" that some kids were out joy riding and firing at signs or mailboxes and not call the police!!!

  • Makes me feel special. I was swarmed with backup when they pulled me over for a seatbelt infraction. I guess they feel more comfortable against gunfire than engaging in logical arguments with westforty. Something's wrong with this story...

-- Posted by westforty on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 11:36 AM
  • Okay why has the article changed? It stated that Mike Biggs responded now it says Matt. Come on Banner Graphic get your story straight before you report it. Also when I learned of this, this morning the first place I looked was bannergraphic. com and guess what NO INFO on this story. So the banner doesn't print a paper today so what....all the officer's would have liked to be at home with their Families and yet have been up most of the night. This is a safety issue for innocent people the Banner should have been the first to report on this. All of the people in this community that don't have kids in school would have no idea what is going on. I am thankful for ALL the police that serve and protect no matter what all of you think they put their lives on the line for us. People so many times don't even know the whole story including myself and yet they just bash bash bash

-- Posted by parentof ghssenior on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 11:50 AM
  • GPD Chief Tom Sutherlin said the vehicle is a black 2007 Chevy Cobalt with the license plate number 559AAG. The vehicle is registered to a Lacey Couch. Suthlerin said he assumed the vehicle was registered in Putnam County, but that he wasn't certain.

Isn't that the vehicle description and license plate number? Maybe some of you need to reread the article.

-- Posted by nefarious on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 12:11 PM
  • Really? All you folks have nothing better to do than bash the Banner and the Police? They don't have to have an online outlet. You should be thanking whomever it is that is trying to keep us updated because I doubt calling the Banner is top priority with the Police today and I doubt a reporter following them around is very safe. Do something constructive with your Internet time. I don't know, organize a neighborhood watch? You all seem to have the answers!

  • I am amazed that everyone wants to get on here and gripe about everything instead of realizing that there are one, if not two, high-powered rifle toting individuals who don't hesitate to shoot at a police officer, loose in this area!!!!!

Yes, it is disconcerting that at 6am when I received a phone call from the school that there was a two-hour delay and that we should check with news media to get details THERE WERE NONE anywhere that I could find (finally got the info from Facebook which strikes me as odd)-however, the situation is very scary and serious. I was glad to have children in school so that I at least had some warning!

Officer Biggs probably should have had some backup but I'm sure that the way people in this town act (or overreact), that he didn't know that when he pulled them over...what I mean by that is shots could have been from a cap gun for all he knew...I'm sure there was no way for a person to identify what type of gun it was when they heard shots and called dispatch.

Let's just hope that they catch them because I do agree our officers are definitely good when hot on the trail of someone that they watch leaving a local tavern or club but the track record on dangerous crimes like armed bank robbery etc. hasn't been so good. I hope they get the opportunity to redeem themselves here.

Let's just hope that our community can learn some positives after this situation is over and hope that no one is injured in the process.

They were all out there risking their lives while trying to apprehend someone who had already shot at one of their own. I think they deserve our support, not our condemnation. Please support and pray for these men and women who are the ones we call on to go "in" when everyone else is running "out"...

  • Can anyone confirm the rumors that one of them has been caught around TZ and that they also found the car around there as well?

-- Posted by Zoth on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 2:27 PM
  • I don't get this "can't criticize the police or newspaper" thing. Though I disagree with Overit in that I think DUI is a MAJOR offense and should remain a priority -- and I'm afraid I have to admit to having one on my record -- but Magoo55, who accuses Overit of sounding ignorant, doesn't want to allow criticism of the police? It's a democracy. It's our DUTY to criticize our public institutions -- including our police and newspapers. And Magoo55 wants no ranking of offenses or priorities in our law enforcement? You can't really mean that. Though I think next to 100% of the police officers I've had contact with here have been professional and well intentioned (next to 100%, not 100%), it doesn't mean A) we should never question their performance (that might actually improve it) or B) that the priorities -- partially set by what the Prosecutor's office thinks is important and presumably we ELECT prosecutors at least partly on what he or she thinks are the appropriate law enforcement priorities for our community-- are the correct ones for our community. And I hope it's OK to comment on the Prosecutor because if, as Magoo55 demands with respect to criticism of the police -- you have to become one -- I'll have to go to law school, pass the bar and then seek to join the prosecutor's office, none of which appeals to me. So it sounds like community members heard shots and thought "no big deal", police officers tried and failed to apprehend suspects, our newspaper has reported on this and in the process made some errors they have sought to correct. Is there not room for both criticism and positive comment here? I don't want to live in a society where you can't be critical? Germany tried that. Holocaust remembrance days are just around the corner.

  • All of the schools in the county canceled all of the evening sporting events because of the shooting.Isn't this a bit dramatic? I agree with safety first but this seems like it's going overboard. Did Parke or Owen County cancel their events?

  • I believe the car was towed away around noon today - Thank God, now I won't have to watch it recklessly speed around the corner like a street-racer every time it drives by!

  • I COMPLETELY agree with dks67! I think I speak on behalf of all the parents in Putnam County when I say that I want my kids out there scoring goals and smashing home runs with no regard for their safty! Not only is it "dramatic" and "overboard" but it's just down-right irresponsible for the schools to cancel (gasp!) any sporting events. Especially when the suspect/suspects/track star that outran the officer clearly only wants to shoot at mail boxes and squad cars. Surely the gunman has the smarts not to shoot at kids or anyone else at this point.

But have seen it for my own eyes that a speeding minivani in the middle of the day with 5 kids in carseats can get more than one cop surrounding it. things that make you go hmmmmmmmm

  • How is the banner graphic using the word "intimated".

"Sutherlin intimated that drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the incident"

Synonyms for intimated are:guilty, sheepish, dejected, humiliated, shamefaced, wretched, downcast, miserable, etc...How does that fit in the above sentence? Please explain

-- Posted by girlmd on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 5:13 PM
    Response by Banner Graphic:
When used as a verb, intimate means "to indicate or make known indirectly; hint; imply; suggest."
  • Innocent, is right life with out parole is not appropriate here, we would all be better off if they hung these folks from the nose of the buzz bomb, and maybe they could make it a pay per view event so we could have some extra money to fix up the roads around here. Im tired of the garage of society getting the easy way out they tried to kill a man it is time for them to be tried and if found guilty killed. And I dont want to hear that crap about they had a rough childhood or they dont know any better, cuase i dont care. HANG EM HIGH!!!!

  • It wouldn't have surprised me if it were my neighbors out doing the shooting. The area I live in (the area where this happened) used to be nice with several older couples and a few families living here. Now it's all rentals and HUD homes. My wife and I have watched the people next door go around back of their house - right in front of our kitchen windows - and smoke crack.

The cops have been there several times. We just wait and hope they move out as quickly as all of the others have.

-- Posted by PlatyPius on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 5:52 PM
  • DEAR "those in glass houses" I'm sorry but the sentence you said, "Surely the gunman would have enuf sense not to shoot at kids or anyone else" that sentence...I just can hardly type, say, or think it..It makes NO SENSE. Honestly what "GUNMAN" has any good sense? Really if they/he/she...whoever fired the shots, had any sense they wouldnt have been out at 1:30AM shooting a gun from a car..or turn that gun on the police. So I wouldnt trust there good judgement at this point. I'm not trying to pick at you, but these kids had to be some IDIOTS to do this in the 1st place. If they were shooting at mailboxes or signs, "TO HAVE FUN" or goof off, isnt that something you do IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE? No I think they were looking for trouble. I cant wait until the whole story comes out so we can know what truly happened. IDIOTS. Every bullet that goes up MUST come down.

-- Posted by truthis on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 6:15 PM
  • dks67....I realize that you think all of this was no big deal, but wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry? If your kids lived near where they were hunting these people, or went to the school that they were near, you would be mad if they had agreed to go to school. Everyone needs to look at the bright side of things and not so much the bad. Also, things need to get done. Look at how many people said they heard shots fired, before the call came in, and how many people didn't make that phone call. I just don't understand why we have gotten to a point where we are not willing to pick up the phone and not make that one call that might have saved everyone from a whole lot of trouble. Maybe it would have been nothing...but at least if it was important....like this was, it would have been taken care of a lot sooner. Lets start being a community that they are afraid to have this kind of activity to go on. Police included...when you go to Hendrick's County, you are afraid to speed. It takes everyone. Not just the police.

  • Okay....CoveredBridgeCyclery, I have a problem with the comment about the neighborhood being nothing but HUD and rentals, I rent, and I am a law abiding citizen....that doesn't automatically make me a bad person. Also, HUD is a wonderful program. I could possibly qualify for that very program. That doesn't make them bad because of it. What did you do? You and your wife watched them, and what did you do? Did you call the police? Did you do what you should have done? Or did you just turn away and do nothing. Being poor doesn't make you a bad person. It isn't right that these things are happening, but being poor doesn't make them happen.

  • Seriously! Those of you who think the schools went overboard on cancelling? SERIOUSLY!? You are the idiots! I don't have kids but if I did, they wouldn't be going to school with a mad shooter on the loose. Come on! It's clear you're upset because your child may be the star of the team or just on a team but get over it! What are the kids supposed to do while walking from the buses to their school or their cars to the high school? What if the shooter(s) went on a rampage and started shooting again? What if your child had been shot in the parking lot? I bet then you'd be suing the school for not cancelling. So what the sporting events got cancelled...DEAL WITH IT. Sports are not the end of the world and the chances your child is going to get discovered in any school in Putnam County for sports is very unlikely. So they'll have to make up a game or banquet..SO WHAT! If you think for one minute that they would have the "sense" to not shoot at a child...then you are the fool. They went on a shooting rampage firing at houses (one of which was mine). Who (in their right mind) does such a thing and keeps their common sense? Drugs and alcohol make people do things no ordinary person would THINK about doing. You need to step back and evaluate the fact that sports seem more important to you than your child's safety. Get a life!

Kudos to the school adminsitrators of GCSC for keeping the students home and safe and kudos for the other schools for keeping on lockdown. Way to go!

    -- Posted by collegegirl2008 on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 7:35 PM
  • This is definitely scary for me to hear because that Justin guy was actually inside North Putnam before and didn't even go to the school and had tried to start fights with the freshman there, my younger sister told me, which was before all this had happened. He had a nickname Chaos and also has it tattooed on his body. Michael Pryor is actually a student from North Putnam that was recently kicked out. So it IS a good idea to cancel the sporting events for today. I don't think you would have wanted these two anywhere near the school. So be a little smarter with your concerns of your kids and their dumb sports next time.

  • @ w8tamin8: I wasn't making a general comment about renters and HUD housing in general, I was commenting on these particular houses/tenants. There are 3 real 'problem' houses in the neighborhood.

I think most of us have rented at some point, so it would be silly to say that rentals are bad.

-- Posted by PlatyPius on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 7:42 PM
  • To: truthis,

Let's be serious for a moment, I was clearly being as sarcastic as one could possibly be. dks67 is who my post was intended for and blatantly mocked the fact that this individual had no regard for their students' well-being. Perhaps this person doesn't even have a student. Maybe dks67 just really, really enjoys high school sporting events. I mean, who doesn't? There's a concession stand and everything!

    -- Posted by those.in.glass.houses on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 8:42 PM
  • Benedick,

Would the kids have truly been 'safer' at school? Simple logic and tactic show that it's better not to "put all of your eggs in one basket". But seems how there was never any immediate threat or reason to believe that any of the students would have been in danger in the first place, perhaps it was an ill-advised decision to keep students at home. Perhaps it was a great measure of precaution. Either way, no matter how you look at it, no one was (luckily) hurt and the kids got to take a break from class and enjoy the nice weather while viewing it from the couch with their video game controller in-hand.

    -- Posted by those.in.glass.houses on Tue, Apr 6, 2010, at 8:52 PM
  • To aemommy: It is the police's fault now that kids were out playing and riding bikes today? Whatever happened to parents being responsible for their children? If the parents had to go to work they should have found safe places for their kids to be and made sure they would not be allowed outside.

To collegegirl2008 and readcloser: Well said!

All ended well thankfully. I really think it is sad that people are so quick to criticize! I am glad that everyone is safe.

  • A bunch of students all in one location could've made them easier targets, whether or not the school was on lock down...hello Columbine?

The kids were safer at home then being gathered all in one place.

Schools do not take lock down very seriously anyways because people are still allowed to leave the building which is still an entry way for an armed individual...which would have been highly ineffective.

Closing the school was a good idea.

  • Thank you GCSC I'm glad you closed the schools. We live right around the corner from TZ. I wasn't sending my kids to school anyway. They can make up school work. I would be lost if something happened to one of my kids.

  • GREAT JOB GREENCASTLE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND PUTNAM COUNTY DEPUTIES! TAKING CHARGE OF A SITUATION THAT COULD HAVE BECOME DEADLY. THANK GOODNESS NO ONE WAS INJURED. I CERTAINLY HOPE THESE INDIVIDUALS ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. YOU WOULD THINK THEY WOULD HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN DRIVE AROUND DRINKING AND SHOOTING AT POLICE OFFICERS. AND WHAT WAS MS. COUCH DOING OUT DRIVING THE CAR....LOOKS LIKE SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOME TAKING CARE OF HER FAMILY INSTEAD OF JOY RIDING WITH A BUNCH OF PUNKS.

  • What's with everyone assuming these people were drinking and driving, or even having a joy ride for that matter - you don't know that. Those kind of facts aren't even out yet. Sure, one can speculate this might have been a busted drug deal, or maybe it was a drunken joyride - but we don't know that yet. What I'd like to know is how and where they caught these people?

  • you people are all crazy i came from a large town and thats all you hear all night long is gun fire. if its not at you or your loved ones than forget about it. mind yuor own bussiness. they didnt hurt anyone just some people out having fun doesnt make them bad peopl.just becouse some of you think you are perfect well your not so just get over it. things like this happen every day in my old home town wat did the cops do noithin cuz no one got hurt. they should focus on more importent things like all the meth being cooked in your town. not bothering kids out shooting at a couple signs.. the gpd had to have them fall in there laps becouse they dont do anything that does not bennefit them.

  • These poor excuses for human beings need to be punished for shooting at officer Biggs, yes I think we can all agree on that, and for all the people who's lives they put in danger. Including the officer's on duty and the citizens of Greencastle. I live right by where these moron's were shooting, I have a nine month old baby at home with me. What if one of those bullets would have came through my house??? It is ridiculous that we even have to think about these sort of things...what is wrong with people?

  • To haveaheartpeople:

You came from a larger city. Yes..gunfire does happen more often in larger cities. But, I'm farily positive that if the gunfire is changed from hitting a couple of signs to shooting AT a police officer, the police in your hometown would do something about it. Personally, I don't care what they were shooting at. They were shooting from a moving vehicle, drugs and alcohol are speculated according to police reports and they were shooting near my home. I'm sorry but I'm not going to just mind my own business when they are shooting towards MY home where I am sleeping. I know I am not a perfect person but you don't see me on the front page of the Banner because I shot at a police officer, ditched my car and tried to run away. Sorry. I don't see how driving in a moving vehicle and shooting at whatever you feel like shooting at qualifies as "fun". If you see that as fun and that there's nothing wrong with it then maybe you should call them up for their next joy ride through the city of Greencastle.

  • I think it was handled perfect,no one was hurt, the kids were safe the perps got caught,we made the news, the police did an excellent job,and now there are three less methheads on the street. Now the question is will the court do thier job,and turn these people around.

-- Posted by obeone on Wed, Apr 7, 2010, at 11:05 AM
  • the police should have went on the call with backup and this would have ended on franklin when the car was pulled over.

    -- Posted by koutscpl2 on Wed, Apr 7, 2010, at 11:09 AM
  • Also to you haveaheartpeople:

No one on here is claiming to be perfect. Understandably, you are coming from a different context (eg, where you come from this type of stuff is "normal", or typical if you will) but the fact that it rarely happens in small-town Greencastle, still does not make socially acceptable -the same applies in a big city. I don't care whether or not someone is under the influence of drugs: you shoot a firearm at someone or something you pay the consequences. Just like when you elect a liberal-democrat president, you suffer the consequences - BAZINGA! Or what if I just decide to quit showing up to work and not expect to get fired - is that realistic? NO. An officer could have lost his life yesterday - these people need to experience the consequences, so "get over it."

  • To HAVE A HEART PEOPLE.........WHY DON'T YOU MOVE BACK TO THE BIG CITY AND DEAL WITH THE GUNSHOTS YOURSELF, BIG TALKER...SOUNDS LIKE YOU COULD RELATE TO THESE PUNKS...

    -- Posted by Michele1953 on Wed, Apr 7, 2010, at 11:27 AM
  • To havaaheartpeople: You stated: "They didn't hurt anyone just some people out having fun." Wow! That makes it all okay? That is preposterous that you would say that. One reason people choose to live in a town like Greencastle is so they don't have to be concerned, on a daily basis, about someone going around firing a gun etc. When you live in a town this size and you hear something that sounds like gunshots, it is a good sign that you should be concerned. I have lived in big cities before and you do learn to somewhat ignore gunshots and police sirens etc. If you didn't it would control your life. If you liked living in the big city so well, maybe you should consider moving back there.

What do you think would happen if we just ignored this and just let the kids "have their fun"? Have you ever heard the saying: "give them an inch and they will take a mile"? As far as the meth goes, how do you know that there is not a connection? We really have not been informed of the details yet. We may not be for a while.

I don't know if anyone in Greencastle thinks they are perfect, including me. No one is. I would like to offer a helpful suggestion. Try working on your spelling and grammar so that you at least sound somewhat intelligent. It doesn't have to be perfect but you could make an effort.

  • BannerGraphic..

When I was taught journalism in college I was taught to write at the grade level of the people reading my article...or to be safe between a 5th-8th grade reading level. My husband and I are both college graduates with an extensive vocabulary and it took us 35 minutes to find your definition of "intimated". Please in the future know the people that read your paper. I do thank you for the clarification. I now have a new word to add to my vocabulary.

  • Does it surprise anyone that the Banner has not reported that a fourth suspect has been arrested, while all of the Indy news channels have been reporting it since the AM?

From WISH tv 8: "GREENCASTLE, Ind. (WISH) - Greencastle Police have arrested a fourth person suspected in an early morning shooting that sparked a manhunt that closed schools....Keven Crowe, 18, on charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and assisting criminal"

I thanked the banner graphic for adding to my vocabulary, I wasn't being rude and yes part of my degree is in journalism. so please tell me how your statement is true. What exactly am I trying to be that I am not. as a side note I welcome learning new words (please note my previous entry)

  • Haveaheartpeople, with all do respect, the big city life you refer to is exactly why people don't live in big cities. Furthermore, that is a big difference between those who live in the city and those who live in the suburbs and country. People in the city are far to accepting of drug deals going down, people getting murdered etc... Outside of the city people handle that type of situation differently because there is a different mindset. I have one son and another baby on the way and my top priority as their father is to make sure that they are as safe as can be. If someone was out at Heritage Lake shooting at signs and then the police, you are darn right I would want those pinheads in jail and tried to the fullest extent of the law. I am sure there are plenty of us who did some dumb things when we were kids and young adults but firing a gun randomly and then shooting at a police officer was not something I would have even considered. These losers need to be tried and convicted and sent to jail for a long time! Also just a quick suggestion, because I am not perfect either with my grammar but you should consider spell check before you post, because after reading your post this big city you so proudly refer to looks like a classic big city with an incredibly crappy public school system.

  • To haveaheartpeople --No one was hurt????? If someone shoots a high powered rifle at your car with you in it are you going to say -No biggie-I'm not hurt?????????? I highly doubt it!!!!! Not to mention that joy-riding and shooting bullets that travel at a high rate of speed IN TOWN is HIGHLY dangerous-stray or errant bullets kill people all the time regardless of the intention of the shooter.

To girlmd --I am also a college graduate (of a four year accredited state university)with a business major and the word is well known to me and also used on television and in the media A LOT!! I read a lot of books-also have seen it there A LOT!!!! What college did you go to??????? and why would you pick on the Banner for using a word that you didn't know or understand (evidently you were the only one but I am impressed by you asking them to dumb-down the paper for you so that you can read at the 5th to 8th grade level)? I give them credit for actually spelling it correctly!!!!!!

Sounds to me like it was good practice because you actually looked it up and learned something new for the day....maybe others did too and learning is a good thing-and something that clearly is needed, with all the improper grammar and spelling that you see in so many comments on this site. That is what should be remarked on....

  • girlmd...

As a college student, one of my favorite websites is dictionary.com... a close second to thesaurus.com. I need synonyms and I need them fast! The first definition for the verb form of 'intimate' on dictionary.com is the one you wanted. Now you'll never have to spend so long looking for a definition again!

    Cheers!

  • mrs. robinson: congrats on great parenting...do not assume that because our kids went to school that we use it as daycare...degrading other parents like myself is making you look bad...you dont know me and therefore should not judge my parenting skills for i would have done the same as you had my childrens school been cancelled..i did not say that ALL kids were out playing but many were....our sports were cancelled because the athletes would be outside practicing and would be in danger...i was happy our school made good decision to protect our children...it is always your right to decide what is best for your children and therefore your right to keep them home but not every parent has the ability to stay home from work to keep their children from being outside. how dare you assume that we just drop off our children at the school like it was a daycare!! i did not lash out at you or other responsible parents like yourself about your parenting skills...by the way, i do know what it is like to bury a child and do not want to go through that ever again....i felt confident that our school and our police were handling the situation with professionalism and wish that everyone who writes online could do the same!!!!! i encourage everyone to actually pay attention to what someone writes because several of you take words completely out of context...NOT A NATIVE: i did not blame police in why school was cancelled, understand what people write and you will not look foolish complaining about an issue that never was brought up!!!

  • To aemommy: Please accept my apology. I mistakenly assumed your last remark about the officers was sarcastic. I should not have just assumed that. I also imagine the School System is the one that cancels school and extra-curricular activites. Again I thought the remark was meant sarcastically and therefore you were blaming the police officers. Hope there are no hard feelings. I am sorry for the loss of your child.

  • Thank you all for your comments...I did graduated from a state accredited university as well. My degree is in Public Relations and Journalism. Unfortunatly as Journalists that is what we are taught (dumb down the paper). Again I never criticized the paper, I thanked them for adding a new word to my vocabulary.

    Really???,

For you to question what school I went to is absurd. I also read books, have traveled quite a bit, and watch television. I have never heard this word used, period!!!Again before you comment please know your facts, if you had read my previous post, I was thanking the BannerGraphic.

  • Not a native: Your apology is easily accepted...thank you for that...so many are quick to judge others when they themselves do nothing but sit back and complain....this whole event tuesday has caused so many people pain and anguish...i have great respect for those who serve our area...after all, i thought officer biggs did a great job of pursuit considering he had pieces of glass in his eye at the time...many would have quit the chase themselves and called for an ambulance...our police force should be supported at this time not picked apart....thanks again for the apology and yes no hard feelings...

  • "wrong place wrong time"? you are right i cant believe u (your name is appropriate) they and you only feel that it is wrong place and time because they got caught....i have come to know that "good people" usually dont drive around shooting at things, people and causing the whole county to be turned upside down....if they were so missed represented and they are so good why did they feel they had to do this? no one is perfect but i cannot understand why you feel the need to defend their actions...
