Cloverdale to outsource town payroll

CLOVERDALE -- The town has moved forward with outsourcing its payroll. Council members voted Tuesday to allow Greencastle-based Payroll Express to handle the town's payroll for its 15 employees.

However, council member Don Sublett questioned the economic advantage of outsourcing payroll, given the town spent $2,400 on a software program called Keystone, which could handle payroll.

While board president Cathy Tipton said she wasn't sure of the economic advantage, the main goal of outsourcing would be to help alleviate pressure in clerk-treasurer Patty Truax's office and be a labor savings.

Tipton added that since there is not a contract between the town and Payroll Express, the town could back out of the business's service at any time.

Payroll Express will officially take over the town's payroll May 1.

Town council members agreed to place a West Central Solid Waste recycling bin in the parking lot of town hall, 154 S. Main St. The bin had been located at Cloverdale schools and was moved to Stardust Hills subdivision until it could be permanently located at town hall.

"I have been amazed at how many people use the bin," said Don Gedert, who was instrumental in bringing the bin to its new home at Town Hall.

In other business:

* Resident Gloria Bergstom went before the council to address several missing street signs in Stardust Hills. She also wanted to request more police patrols in the area.

Puffer assured her he would talk to interim town marshal Jon Chadd about additional police coverage. Tipton told Bergstom she could make a list of missing signs and give it to utility manager Don Guthrie.

"The situation will be taken care of," Tipton said.

* The council approved the purchase of an under road borer at a cost of $500 from CSU. While it wasn't the cheapest quote, Guthrie recommended spending the additional $50 difference on the directional borer.

  • Hmmmm, to alleviate pressure in the clerks office and reduce the amount of work the clerk treasurer does? Sounds like a smart move to me. Now we can reduce what we pay the clerk treasurer as the workload and pressure of the position is diminished. Perhaps even make it a part time position with no benefits. Think how much that would save the community!

  • Why not sell a couple of the police cars to Greencastle.....they just sit in the parking lot, and Greencastle is looking to puchase some new one?
