Tiger Cubs continue early season success against Mounties

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- The Greencastle boys' golf team narrowly defeated Southmont Thursday on the road, 174-177.

"It was kind of ugly out there at times, but it was a win nonetheless," GHS head coach Donovan Wheeler. "I'm happy that some younger kids had a chance to log some top 5 time, too."

Brad Haussin led the GHS team with a 37, followed by Jimmy Wheeler with a 42 and Mark Benassi with a 46. Raymond Stinson and Derik Thomas chipped in a pair of 49s and Joe Kaiser added a 56.

"I thought Marcus Benassi's effort was very encouraging. He lost some shots out there to a handful of bad decisions, but he also hit some very nice shots, too. I was impressed with his outing," Wheeler commented.

Haussin posted a nice score for the Tiger Cubs, but Wheeler noted that he day didn't start off the best.

"Brad opened with a comical double and then parred out the course," Wheeler said. "He sees a bad hole as just that: a bad hole. He kicks himself in the backside, and then moves on. He doesn't expect one mistake to lead to another and another and so on. That's why he's so good. It's so much fun to watch him play when he's in a bind. He's a fierce, determined competitor.

"Jim was about 3-5 good putts away from a super day. He's in a rough spot, but he's one breakout day away from putting it behind him," he added.

In the junior varsity match, GHS lost to the Mounties 212-225.

J.T. Hennette was the top finisher with a 53, while Dakota Miller and Wataru Otaki carded a pair of 55s. Cy Spencer chipped in a 62.

The Tiger Cubs will compete in the Braves Invitational at Rea Park today at 9 a.m.
