Kinton receives sentence

GREENCASTLE -- A Greencastle man was sentenced Thursday for attempting to break into a Greencastle business.

Brian Kinton, 35, has been in jail since his Nov. 13 arrest. He pled guilty on Thursday to one count of Class C felony burglary, and received a three-year Indiana Department of Correction sentence.

With his time already served and good time credit, Kinton will be released from jail in 17 days.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, a Class A misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement against Kinton was dropped.

The maximum sentence Kinton could have received was nine years.

Kinton's arrest stemmed from an incident on Nov. 13 in which officers from the Greencastle Police Department responded to an alarm at the Speedway gas station on Indianapolis Road. When police arrived at the Speedway, they found a man dressed in dark clothing -- later identified as Kinton -- crawling down from inside the building.

According to court documents, Kinton attempted to flee on foot, but was caught shortly after the alarm was tripped.

At the time of his arrest, Kinton was in possession of a screwdriver and a duffel bag containing jewelry. His blood alcohol content was .10 percent.

Kinton had no prior criminal history in Putnam County.
