Trio of local teams still vying for sectional title

Monday is going to see a lot of baseball action as the 2010 Class 2A and Class 3A baseball sectional conclude. Of the games remaining, Greencastle, South Putnam and Cloverdale are still in the hunt for a sectional championship.

The Clovers will get things going first Monday as they face Speedway at 10 a.m. at the North Putnam sectional. In the Clovers first game, pitcher Kyle Martin was able to withstand lightning delays and the Monrovia offense to get the win 7-6.

Following the Clovers will be South Putnam battling Cascade who edged past North Putnam late to get a 5-4 win Thursday. The Eagles came out bats blazing and won their contest over Covenant Christian 6-5.

Pitcher Grant Zimmerman led the offensive charge as well, connecting on two home runs and four RBIs. Cameron Chestnut also hit a home run and had two RBIs.

Greencastle advanced to the sectional semifinals by defeating Sullivan 8-6 Wednesday. Keegan Remsburg led the Tiger Cubs on the mound, while Ryan Battin, Andy Bell and Patrick Richardson all had extra base hits in the contest.

Monday is calling for a 40 percent chance of rain and a high of 80.

Cloverdale will face Speedway at 10 a.m. at the Class 2A North Putnam Sectional, with South Putnam facing Cascade following. Greencastle will battle host South Vermillion at the Class 3A South Vermillion sectional at approximately 1 p.m.
