Downton Farmers' Market returns Saturday

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- The Downtown Farmers' Market returns this Saturday for a weekly celebration of local food and community on the square.

Building on its growth in 2009, this year's market welcomes back returning vendors while also featuring a number of new faces.

Anna Kendall will make her debut selling at the market this Saturday.

"After enjoying shopping last year, I'm looking forward to getting involved as a vendor," Kendall said. "While I'm excited about sharing my organic produce, it's also about engaging with the broader community and having conversations that wouldn't otherwise be possible for me as a farmer on the outskirts of Greencastle."

New vendors also include Brett Wagner, who plans to sell vegetables, pork and chicken. Pinhook Pottery's Sarah Myers will have eggs, homemade granola, flowers, and birdhouse gourds in addition to pottery. Dennis Furr of the Blue Door Café will be on hand with coffee to help get your weekend moving.

Among many returning vendors is Bob Zaring, who plans to sell a variety of greens this week including romaine, buttercrunch and leaf lettuce, as well as bok choy, broccoli raab, radishes, peas and green onions. Yvonne Clifford of Straight From the Farm Market will bring fresh Berkshire pork, a variety of lettuces and herbs, tomato plants and hanging baskets including petunias, vinkas and geraniums.

In addition to locally grown and made food and goods, the Downtown Farmers' Market will continue to celebrate local musicians. Folk guitarists Doug Cox and Ron Dye will perform Saturday morning at 10 a.m., followed by a June 12 DePauw alumni group in conjunction with Alumni Reunion Weekend.

The Downtown Farmers' Market is one of two Greencastle-Putnam County farmers' markets open this summer. The Robe-Ann Park Farmers' Market will occur in conjunction with the Civic League's Parkfest on Tuesday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m., will open on June 15.

Cathryn Ensley, Friends of the Farmers' Market chair, said, "Given the great response in 2009, we've been eagerly awaiting the opening on June 5. We're enthusiastic about the continued growth of the Downtown Farmers' Market as well as the new Robe-Ann Park Farmers Market, both of which will provide our community with access to an expanding group of local food and goods vendors."

The Downtown Farmers' Market, open from 8 a.m. to noon, will run from June 5 through October 16 on the north side of the downtown square. For more information, contact meetatthemarket@gmail.com or 653-1737.

  • I like nothing more than a Saturday morning walk downtown to the farmers market to buy local. Not only do I find incredibly fresh produce (last summer made some outstanding squash/pumpkin soup) but also come in contact with such wonderful people whom I may not have otherwise met. A big thanks to the area musicians like Doug Cox and Ron Dye for giving their time to entertain us with their musical talents. Let us be thankful for the growing popularity of local farmers markets, what a great way of bringing people together!

  • I agree- Everyone needs to spend a Saturday morning there and see if it is "your thing" Thanks to all those vendors who get up early and set up- we need more opportunities to interact with our fellow Greencastle people!
