Gun permit applications can now be done online

GREENCASTLE -- Applying for a personal protection firearm license or a handgun permit can now be done online.

The new process allows applicants to complete an application from home or any public Internet site and then visit either the Greencastle Police Department or Putnam County Sheriff's Department, depending on location of residence, to pay fees and have the application finalized with a criminal check.

One advantage of completing the form online is the expedited process. For example, applicants can choose to have fingerprints electronically submitted, which has an approximate three to seven day turn around compared to the 12-week return of the permit.

During the process, applicants will be directed to a site to schedule an electronic fingerprint appointment and provided with a receipt to present at the sheriff's department.

However, anyone residing in a town with a town marshal should contact the marshal's office before applying online to verify the department has access to the program necessary for completion of the form.

Online applications will be processed at the sheriff's department from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday only. Anyone wanting to complete a paper application can still do so at the times above Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays at PCSD.

In addition, GPD will process applications from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Roachdale residents must contact Town Marshal Mike Mahoy to set a date to complete the form.

The firearm licensing section can be accessed by visiting www.in.gov/isp and click the firearms section and the handgun license application.

For questions about the new application process, call the PCSD at 653-3120 or GPD at 653-2925.
