Peggy Gilmer

Peggy Platt Gilmer, 86, passed away at her home in Greencastle on Thursday, June 10, 2010.

Born Dec. 28, 1923, in Oak Park, Ill., she earned her BA degree from Carleton College with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors in 1945. Two masters degrees, her first from Harvard University in classical studies and her second from Northwestern University in English followed. Professor Gilmer taught Latin at Carleton and from 1969 into the 1990s taught English and classical studies at DePauw University.

She was a member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, the Greencastle League of Women Voters, the Gourmet Club and the Janeities.

Mrs. Gilmer was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Georgia Platt; her sister, Doris Platt; and her first husband, Donald Anderson.

Her survivors include her husband, Walker Gilmer; her daughter, Gail Landauer and husband Alan; her son, Charles Gilmer and wife Carolyn; her grandson, Andrew Landauer and wife Yuki; her two granddaughters, Beth Munger and Amy Ruder and husbands Ian and Adam, respectively; and her great-grandson, James Alan Landauer.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Peggy Gilmer will be held at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church at 3p.m. on June 27. A reception will follow.
