Cox gets 18-month sentence

Friday, July 2, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- A Greencastle man was sentenced Thursday for battering an 18-month old.

Anthony M. Cox, 22, was convicted on one count of Class D felony battery. Judge Matthew Headley sentenced Cox to 18 months with one year executed. Cox will spend the last three months of his executed time on house arrest, with the final six months on probation.

Cox was arrested on May 19. He posted 10 percent of a $5,000 bond and was released from jail that day.

Cox admitted to striking the child, who was taken to the hospital with injuries to his legs, forehead, face and eye area.

His bond was revoked in early June, however, when a charge of Class B misdemeanor false reporting or informing was filed against Cox. Court reports said Cox hampered the attempts of police to locate a minor female who had been reported in Michigan as a runaway.

According to police reports, officers went to Cox's home to locate the girl, and Cox told them he had seen her in Cloverdale two days earlier and that he was the only person in his apartment.

Cox allowed the officer into his home, where the girl was discovered, court records said.

That case is pending.

Cox will receive credit for the time he has spent in jail.

  • You have got to be kidding me. WOW

  • WOW! That's a really light sentence. Just think: maybe one more hit would have resulted in death. A guy just recently in Vigo County hit a small baby several times and the baby died as a result. Maybe if he had hit that baby just one less time, he, too would only be serving a short sentence, too. Men: next time you hit a small child, just don't overdo it. (Sarcasm)

    This is disgusting!

  • yes i agree i dont normally comment on these things but the sentence is ridiculous what could be worse then striking a defenseless child not once but 4 times?come on wake up putnam county not only is our judicial system a joke and incompetent but have you driven on our county roads lately?if i remember i paid my taxes just like everyone else i would say we have the worst roads in the state we need new leadership and fast these people dont have a clue.

  • I am ashamed of the officials in Putnam county. You are far more interested in prosecuting non-violent offenders than protecting our children! Actually the whole system is terrible here, where did we find these incompetent people? This guy has physically hurt a child and hiding another one, if this had happened to a public servant he would have been properly sentenced the first time. You all need to be replaced with competent people!!!

  • I cannot believe Headly let this guy off so easy. The public officials in this county are a joke. People who are charged with non-violent crimes get punished to the max, while those who commit violent crimes get a slap on the wrist. That baby could have died. There are people charged with DUI's or PI's and get more time than this guy. Some people who are charged with minor crimes in this town are treated as if they went on a murderous rampage, while others are mildly scolded. When the election comes back around, everyone needs to keep these things in mind...lets get some competent officials in this county and get rid of all the corruption that goes on here. This town disgusts me and never ceases to amaze me.

  • I personally will remember especially this case when election time comes. We need officials that will protect our children in these cases. Did this sentence teach him anything? I would guess not! SHAME ON HEADLY FOR NOT TEACHING A BETTER LESSON.

Maybe this guys misunderstood, stressed out, underappreciated etc. etc. etc. There may be reasons someone acts the way they do BUT THERE IS "NO" EXCUSE FOR THIS!!!

  • A sad but true story,

My nephew was caught with drugs, sad but true.

My nephews father went to school with Headley.

Apparently they got into a fight in like the 5th grade or something. My nephew is looking at 16 years for a non violent crime, tried as an adult at 17 by Headley. this is a grudge sentence.

Then this guy beats a baby and gets nothing really.

We should all rise up and go arrest Headley!

This man clearly is the judicial idiot of Putnam county.

Because of the history with the two families, my nephews lawyer asked for a different judge.

HEADLEY DENIED THE REQUEST, then turned to my nephew and said "Son your gonna get the max"

Tell me that isnt personal? A lawyer asks for a change of venue and the Judge adds 15 years to a sentence? 15 years and hes only 18 now.

Hes just a kid, he'll be almost 40 when its over.

All because Headley got beat up in the third grade.

  • "People can be so Ignorant" It almost defies belief that people can come up with such abject nonsense as what I have read in these statements.

Clearly, all the facts are not stated in this article. Our Judge's have alot of power but not enough that they could sentence someone over a so called grudge. You have to have probable cause to arrest someone. So okay let's point the finger at law enforcement and make stupid comments about them. The next step is the police report goes to the Prosecutor's Office and the Prosecutor is the one who makes the decision of who get's charged and what exactly those charges are. So why don't we point the finger at the Prosecutor's and make stupid comments about them. After the charges are filed the case will then goes before the Judge and many things are looked at prior to a sentencing; Is this the person's first offense, did this person come in and admit to the allegations, what is the State's recommendation; what will the Probation Officer's recommendation be; all those things come into consideration at the time of sentencing. Oh, and I would like to clarify that a Juvenile who is waived to adult Court has (1.) Either had many delinquency petitions filed against them or (2.) They have committed a violent crime. A juvenile is waived to adult Court when all options have been exhausted in their rehabilitation. Each criminal case MR (Murder) FA FB FC FD (Felony) and CM all carry a minumum and a maximum sentence so regardless of what you think the Judge CAN NOT add an extra 15 years to a sentence just because someone wanted a change of venue. I understand everyone's frustration when a child is hurt. A child should never be put in a situation where they are abused. Instead of pointing the finger at the one's in charge if you really want to make a difference work on trying to change some of the laws. Or if you think you can do a better job in one of the Office's and are educated enough to do so then put your name on the ballot.

  • Uhhhhh Yea......................Cinnamon.

The courts recommended a one year sentence followed by probation. Though I both understand and agree with your post, we do have a cowboy judicial sentence (sometimes) in Greencastle.

When a judge has lunch with his prosecutors and retains close ties as they do, clearly some agreements are made during social times.

Regardless, are we supposed to wait for this guy to beat another kid, then say "oh well hes done it twice, he's now a repeat offender" and then give him time?

Which in Greencastle if you are a child abuser or molester ammounts to probation. They should all be thrown in jail and let the boys in there do as they please to the filth that prey on our children or harm them in anyway.
