Teen-only concert at Robe-Ann features TGL
GREENCASTLE -- During the months of long days and heat, it seems teenagers are glad to be out of school, yet still find themselves bored. One member of Friends of the Park wanted to do something about the problem.
As part of Friends of the Park's celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month, Jan Firebaugh decided to put together a teen-only concert, set for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Robe-Ann Park.
The show will take place at Robe-Ann's band shell and shelter No. 1 and will feature Asteria and a reunion of local band TGL.
Firebaugh said teens are an age group sometimes lost in the shuffle of parks and recreation activities, but one that should not be overlooked.
"We're always trying to think, 'What's missing?' and I have a soft spot for teenagers," Firebaugh said. "I've said, 'Organized teenage fun is better than unorganized teenage fun,' and that's how you have to look at it. It's always a little work when you have teenagers. It's a necessary aspect of parks and recreation. You've got to keep offering these kids something to do."
A show by TGL should pique the interest of local music fans, as the foursome (3/4 of which is from Greencastle) played its "farewell" show the April of 2009. However, Will Cath (drums), Zach Stewart (bass), Boyd Lewis (guitar) and John Sibbitt (guitar and vocals) will be back together for this event.
The night will also feature Asteria, a northern Indiana-based five-piece managed by Stewart's Euphoric Artist Management.
Besides the music, the Friends of the Park will be offering popcorn and soft drinks to the teens.
While this is just one concert, Firebaugh is hoping to someday offer a series of shows appealing to teens.
"I would love to have a whole series of summer concerts for teens, but you have to do just one at a time, see how it goes, and then plan for that," Firebaugh said.
