FotP to distribute ice pops at pool

GREENCASTLE -- Residents are invited to celebrate "love your parks" at the Greencastle Aquatics Center from noon to 1 p.m. The Friends of the Park Association of Greencastle will pass out "love your parks" coupons to pool patrons that can be exchanged for delicious frozen ice pops.

This was so successful last year that it was a must to repeat for Parks and Recreation month. FotP has partnered with the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department to create several events to celebrate.

The month of July has been designated by Congress as Parks and Recreation Month since its inception in 1985. Started as way to get people to enjoy the outdoors and live an active, healthy lifestyle, last year the designation was updated and revised.

The National Recreation and Park Association spearheaded this resolution. This year, the NRPA themed the month as "Celebrate, Advocate, Recreate!" and hopes to remind communities how important our parks, greenspaces and an active, outdoor lifestyle are to our well being.

Barbara Tulipane, the organization's chief executive officer, summed up the focus of the NPRA and Park and Recreation Month saying, "Parks and recreation are critically important to the economic and environmental well-being of communities, and the physical and mental health of individuals...it's important for Americans to use their collective voices and energy this July to fight for well supported and robust park and recreation systems."
