Ex-Carmel player not at DePauw this year

GREENCASTLE -- A former Carmel High School student accused of attacking younger players will not be enrolling at DePauw this month.

Robert Kitzinger, 19, will not be among the 621 freshmen converging on campus for when orientation begins on Aug. 21.

"After careful consideration, DePauw University has decided to indefinitely defer the enrollment of Robert Kitzinger, who was admitted as a member of the Class of 2014," a statement from the school read.

Kitzinger, along with former Carmel basketball teammates Oscar Falodun and Brandon Hoge, is charged with misdemeanor counts of battery and criminal recklessness. Teammate Scott Laskowski also faces the charge of misdemeanor criminal recklessness.

"This decision in no way reflects any determination on the University's part as to Mr. Kitzinger's innocence or guilt. The allegations he has been facing since spring remain unresolved," the statement continued. "With incoming students due to report on Aug. 21, the University has determined that it is in the best interests of all admitted students, including Mr. Kitzinger, that his enrollment be deferred.

"If, when the criminal and civil cases have been fully resolved, Mr. Kitzinger and his family wish for us to reconsider his enrollment at DePauw, the University will consider that request."

Kitzinger's father Kirk Kitzinger was a four-time basketball letterman for the Tigers between 1977 and 1980.

  • WOW! Another example of how poor decisions can ruin things for a lot of people. Young people ... pay attention to this.
