New events planned at Crossroads Arena

CLOVERDALE -- While professional horse shows are a big part of what goes on at Crossroads Arena in Cloverdale, owner Steve Jackson is trying to branch out and use the space for more varied events.

To that end, the first annual Crossroads Bike Rally is set for today through Sunday.

"We haven't really done much out here that local people can be involved in," Jackson said. "This is something different that is definitely not horse show-related."

Today, the bikes will be coming in and the venue will be set up for when the action really takes off on Friday.

Activities planned for Friday include sand volleyball and a waitress race.

On Saturday, there will be more sand volleyball, a poker run beginning at 10 a.m. and a bike rodeo featuring tandem barrels, flag races, water balloon tosses and a tennis slalom.

The event will also feature live entertainment -- slated to perform are Bent Richards on Thursday night and the Reese Dickerson Band and the Lewis Copeland Band on Friday and Saturday nights.

Fees for the rally are $40 for a car and driver and $10 per passenger. Camper hook-up with electric and water is $100, and primitive camping is available for $40.

Any fees include entry to the arena, general admission for all live entertainment, entry to all field events, eligibility for all prizes and entry into any contests or games.

The bike rally is open to adults 18 and older.

Then on Oct. 1 and 2, Crossroads will welcome the members of the professional Lone Star Rodeo company.

Lone Star is based in Crofton, Ky., and produces rodeos year around throughout the country.

"This is real rodeo," Jackson said.

Admission to the rodeo will be $8 for children and $10 for adults in advance, and $10 for children and $15 for adults in advance.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 795-4768.

Other activities planned at Crossroads are "Horse Whisperer" Dennis Reis Sept. 3-5 and a quad racing event sometime in the winter.

"There are no dates set on the quad racing, but we're pretty sure we'll be doing a six-race series," Jackson said. "We're working on getting sponsorships right now."

Jackson said he looks forward to hosting a wider variety of events at Crossroads.

"We've really got to step out and do some different things," he said.
