MARTINSVILLE -- It was a rough day for local girls golfers at the Martinsville Regional Saturday. The GHS golf team and Cloverdale's Sydney Shrum failed to qualify for state, but most were happy to make it to the next step.

Greencastle was led by Chelsea Samuels with a 95. She was followed by Katie Hedge's 97. Diane Wokoun shot a 110, Kay Wood a 117 and McKenzie St. Marie fired a 124.

As a team, the Tiger Cubs finished in 12th place with a total of 419. Head coach Brad Kingma said he knew it would be tough for his team to hang with the bigger schools at Martinsville.

"We knew we were never going to compete with all the large schools that we have here. We shot 201 on the front and we were ahead of both Terre Haute South and Avon and we just weren't able to maintain it through the back nine," he said.

He also noted his No. 1 golfer wasn't pleased with her round on Saturday.

"Chelsea's quite disappointed. She wanted to play a lot better; she just wasn't able to get anything going," Kingma said.

He said the team was tense and that it was evident in his team's short game. Kingma said at that level of compeition, you can't just give away shots.

The Tiger Cubs will lose Samuels, Wokoun and Wood due to graduation, so next year's team will have a whole new look.

Cloverdale's Shrum struggled on the front nine and wasn't able to recover. After hitting a solid drive and second shot on hole No. 10, Shrum knocked her next shot out-of-bounds. She hit a nice approach, but failed to chip on the green, eventually carding a nine on the hole.

The action on No. 10 personified Shrum's day. She battled bad shots throughout the day, but according to her head coach Ken Williams at the turn, it was an honor for her just to be there.

Martinsville won the regional with a score of 322. The team posted no score higher than 81 en route to its victory. The overall medalist was Allyson Hackman of Brownstown Central with a score of 78.
