Ruth S. Carter died at her home unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010 in Brazil.

She was born Sept. 1, 1919 in Dick Johnson Township as the daughter of John Henry and Frances Houk Sampson Sr.

Following graduation from high school she graduated from Indiana State University. She married Ray A. Carter Aug. 22, 1948 in Brazil. She taught grades 1 through 4 for 36 years at the Pinkley, Alabama, Perth, Bee Ridge and Meridian Street schools. Following retirement, Ruth enjoyed making candy and sharing it with family and friends. She was a member of the Fairview Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray A. Carter on Jan. 11, 2005; brother, John Henry Sampson; sister, Mary Skelton; and two nieces, Patricia Skelton and Julie Stevenson.

Ruth and Ray were the loving parents of one daughter, Jean Ann Carter, who survives. Ruth is also survived by one sister, Jennie King of Clarinda, Iowa; and brothers-in-law, Roy Carter and Russell Stoms of Brazil.

Ruth thought very highly of all her nieces and nephews: Bob (Nancy) Sampson of Terre Haute; Larry (Sharon) Sampson, Ted (Linda) Sampson, Sue (Chet) Stevenson, Jim (Tonya) Sampson, John Sampson, all of Brazil; Mary C. Skelton and Lucy Skelton of Indianapolis; and Donald (Jane) King and Shirley King of Clarinda, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Moore Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Steve Ford officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.
