Extension Homemakers Achievement Night focused on history

Friday, October 8, 2010

"Do You Know Your Putnam County History?" was the theme for the evening and the topic addressed by keynote speaker and retired DePauw professor Dr. John Baughman during the 2010 Putnam County Extension Homemakers Achievement Night program Wedensdasy.

Members of the Tuesday Getaways and Pals on the Go Extension Homemakers Clubs planned the evening which focused on the history of Putnam County.

Baughman shared a brief history of Putnam County from pioneer times through today with a nod to the roles and conditions of women during through the years.

Even though he admitted to not being very familiar with the Indiana Extension Homemakers organization prior to the program, Baughman mentioned that he was inspired by the group and its history and was especially delighted to learn that he had a personal connection to the group when he learned that his own step-mother, Frances Rector Baughman, had been a past county president of Putnam County Extension Homemakers, back in 1931.

The Achievement Night program also included a memorial tribute to members who passed away during the past year and recognized nearly 80 one hundred percent members. Three clubs (Club 16, Merry J's and the Northern Lights) were recognized as Model Clubs and eight clubs (Allspices, Boondock Pals, Country Bak'n Bunch, Family Friends and Fun, Friends and Neighbors, Heritage Heartland and Town & County) were recognized for achieving the status of Honor Club.

A monetary donation is being made to the newly formed IEHA Cancer Research Foundation on behalf of the three clubs that achieved Model status and the eight that achieved Honor status for the past program year.

In addition four members (June Albright, Judy Neel, Clema Perkins and Marian Ullrich) were recognized as new 50 Year Members.

Putnam County Extension Homemakers has a long history in Putnam County and is still one of the largest and most active volunteer organizations in the community.
