No significant storm damage reported
GREENCASTLE -- A heavy storm that blew through Putnam County earlier today apparently caused no significant damage.
"The only major thing reported from the time the storm was going on was an electrical fire in Russellville, and I don't even know if that was storm-related," said Putnam County 911 director Dave Costin.
Costin said he received reports that winds in the Terre Haute area reached speeds of 60-70 mph, but that the winds accompanying the storm in Putnam County, which began around 9 a.m., were not that severe.
"It's quiet right now," Costin said just before 10 a.m. "That's strange, because usually the phones are ringing off the hook after a storm goes through."
Costin said Putnam County dispatch received calls about downed power lines on Avenue C in Greencastle and a sign that had blown into the road on S.R. 240.
Costin said the storm had come to and gone from Putnam in about 10 or 15 minutes. A tornado warning was issued for northern Putnam County, but was quickly cancelled.
"It was over pretty quick," he said. "They issued the tornado warning, and I had only sent emergency notifications to about 75 percent of the list when it was cancelled. We heard rumors of funnel clouds being sighted in other counties, but none were sighted here."
Costin said Putnam County residents should be on alert, however, for the possibility of severe weather throughout the day.
"I'm a little concerned, because from what I hear this is going to happen all day," he said. "The radar looks pretty clear now, but we're on some kind of alert until 8 o'clock tonight."
