ArtsFest 2010 set to sustainably engage community, campus

ArtsFest 2010 will explore art in and of the community that relates to sustainability, Greencastle and DePauw relations and castles. This annual celebration showcases the creative and performing arts talents of members of the DePauw and Greencastle communities and visiting artists. Ongoing Events

* Community Photo Exhibition; Daily hours 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., DePauw Nature Park, Welcome Center. Photography by local and regional photographers.

* The Bench Project, DePauw University Campus. Creative benches designed and built by DePauw students, all of which are signed. A map with locations will be available in the Peeler lobby.

* Art Blows, DePauw University Campus. Large-scale, inflatable sculptures push the boundaries of public sculpture. This event is sponsored by the DePauw Department of Art "Sculpture in Public Places" class.

* Portrait of the Artist in Greencastle, Roy O. West Library. A medley of books, articles, and other materials on Greencastle art.

* Indiana Artists Series: 2D(A), Low Road Gallery, 104 W Washington St. This exhibition of work by Michelle Given, Jennifer Herrold, Justin Schwab and Rachel Wolfson is the first of four media-themed group shows that highlight some of the best contemporary artists in the state. In particular, the work in 2D(A) features paintings and photographs that focus on the figure and how individuals fit into uncomfortable and unusual spaces. From Herrold's colorful narratives to Wolfson's quiet buildings seemingly devoid of human presence, viewers will connect with feelings of being an individual immersed in an often overwhelming environment.

* "The Veil: Visible and Invisible Spaces," Sept. 7-Dec. 10, Galleries at Peeler, Richard E. Peeler Art Center. By engaging perceived wisdom about the veil -- particularly current clichés and stereotypes about Islamic practices -- this exhibition reflects on the ubiquity, importance and profundity of the veil throughout human history and imagination. * "Terrence Hannum: New Rites," Sept. 22-Dec. 10, Galleries at Peeler, Richard E. Peeler Art Center. Terrence Hannum's paintings, drawings, and video installations employ the imagery and rituals of underground music subcultures as a means of exploring the transcendence and impermanence of sound and performance. * Tarrah Krajnak and Wilk Roig: "(untitled #)", Today through Dec. 10, Galleries at Peeler, Richard E. Peeler Art Center. Deeply rooted in the language of the archive and the dialect of performance, Tarrah Krajnak and Wilka Roig's photographs expose the rhetoric underlying representational strategies and question their relationship to history and contemporary culture. Monday, Nov. 1

* Green Bag Lunch Series: Community Poetry, 11:40 a.m. to 1 p.m., Roy O. West Library, Reading Room. Former state poet laureate Joyce Brinkman will talk about poetry in public places, including the poem "What Grows Here" by Joe Heithaus recently painted on a barn on West Walnut Street. Bring a lunch. Dessert and drinks provided.

* "Breaking Away," 7:30 p.m., Ashley Square Cinemas. The award-winning classic film set in Bloomington about "townies" entering the annual Indiana University Little 500 bicycle race. Discussion follows about town/gown relations at 9:15 p.m. at the Inn at DePauw.

Tuesday, Nov. 2

* Green Bag Lunch Series: Visual Voice, 11:40 a.m. to 1 p.m., Green Center for the Performing Arts, Great Hall. Senior voice students performing songs from opera, musical theatre, and more strung together with a unified plot and some very creative dialogue. Bring a lunch. We'll provide dessert and drinks.

* Greencastle Service Theatre, 4 p.m., Green Center for the Performing Arts, Moore Theatre. Greencastle High School teams up with the Greencastle Service Theatre to create an original, interactive performance about the relationship of Putnam County youth to the larger community.

* Trash Our Runway, 6 p.m., Green Center for the Performing Arts, Thompson Recital Hall. DePauw and Greencastle High School students work together to offer a "recycled" fashion show. Sponsored by the DePauw Student Arts Council and Greencastle High School.

* "Larks on a String," 7:30 p.m., Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media, Watson Forum. This 1968 Czech film whimsically captures political prisoners in a "re-education" camp building community with each other and eventually with those that guard them. Discussion to follow film.

Wednesday, Nov. 3

* Green Bag Lunch Series: Ethics of Social Practice Art, 11:40 a.m. to 1 p.m., Richard E. Peeler Art Center, Auditorium. A lecture by Indianapolis community art activist Jim Walker, on Social Practice Art and the ethical controversy that this community-based, interactive creative work raises. Bring a lunch. Dessert and drinks provided.

* Artist Talk and Opening Reception: Tarrah Krajnak and Wilka Roig: "(untitled#)", 4 p.m., Richard E. Peeler Art Center, Auditorium. See ongoing events listing for details.

* Kelly Writers Series: Matt Dellinger, 7:30 p.m., Green Center for the Performing Arts, Thompson Recital Hall. DePauw alumnus and author Matt Dellinger will read from his book "Interstate 69: The Unfinished History of the Last Great Highway in America."

Thursday, Nov. 4

* Green Bag Lunch Series: This I Believe, Part I, noon to 1 p.m., Putnam County Public Library. Putnam County Reads program presents readings of selected "This I Believe" personal essays written by Putnam County middle school, high school, college students and adult community members. Bring a lunch. Dessert and drinks provided.

* This I Believe, Part II, 7:30 p.m., Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics. See ongoing events listing for details.

* Locrian, 9 p.m., Green Center for the Performing Arts, Theta Garden. Occupying the vast nothing at the crossroads of black metal, noise, power electronics and drone, Locrian's experimental sound is inspired by the crumbling industrial decay of their native Chicago.

* DePauw University Jazz at the Duck: Frank Portolese, 9 p.m., The Walden Inn, The Fluttering Duck. In its 11th season, DePauw Jazz at the Duck is a weekly jazz series dedicated to bringing diverse programming to the DePauw and Greencastle Communities. A DePauw alumnus, jazz guitar virtuoso Frank Portolese will grace the Duck with a solo guitar performance.

Friday, Nov. 5

* Green Bag Lunch Series: Community Theatre, 11:40 a.m. to 1 p.m., Green Center for the Performing Arts, Great Hall. Join theatre artists from the university and the community to brainstorm new and innovative collaborative efforts. Bring a lunch. Dessert and drinks provided.

* Art Walk through the Green Castle, 3 to 10 p.m., various locations in downtown Greencastle. Art, music, and poetry at various locations in downtown Greencastle -- see website for participating locations and hours. * Opening Doors: Sharing Music Among Communities, 4 p.m., East College, Meharry Hall. A recital of Greencastle community voice and piano students of all ages presented in DePauw's own "castle."

* Performing Arts Series: Tad Robinson and Friends, 7:30 p.m., Green Center for the Performing Arts, Great Hall. Two-time W.C. Handy Award nominee and Greencastle resident Tad Robinson presents an evening of blue-eyed soul at the closing night party for ArtsFest. Robinson, acknowledged by many as one of the greatest living soul blues vocalists, is also a harmonic player whose repertoire includes original songs as well as covers of classic and contemporary soul and blues songs. Joining Robinson will be the Average House Band, a Greencastle favorite for more than 25 years. Cash bar.
