Halloween party set for Saturday

Thursday, October 28, 2010

For the second year, the Family, Friends & Fun Extension Homemakers club will host an event to raise money for the local Coats for Kids campaign, as well as to support the Putnam County Fairgrounds.

This year's event will be a Halloween party. It will take place on Saturday at the fairgrounds from 1 to 4 p.m.

The party will feature food, drinks, games and a costume contest. There will also be a raffle and a silent auction.

Jessica Smith, a member of Family, Friends & Fun who is helping to organize the party, said local businesses and individuals have been very helpful in the way of donations for the auction and raffle.

"We've had a lot of good luck," she said.

Last year, the club hosted a movie night and sock hop, and raised more than $400 for Coats for Kids.

"This year, we knew we wanted to do something a little more kid-friendly," Smith said.

Those who would like to donate new or gently used coats for Coats for Kids may do so at the party. Although the official distribution of coats for this year will take place earlier in the day on Saturday, there are always families in need that can't make it and need to arrange to get coats afterward.

"We're hoping to get lots of families (at the party)," Smith said. "Most of the games and activities are geared toward kids in the 0 to 12 age range, but everyone is welcome."

Categories for the costume contest will include most original and cutest.

"We're trying to stay away from scary things because of all the little kids," Smith said.

Prizes for the raffle include a birthday party package from Monster Mini-Golf in Avon, gift certificates for portraits and Indianapolis Indians tickets.

"We have all kinds of things," Smith said.

There will be concessions available for a nominal charge.

"We'll have pizza and hot dogs," Smith said. "We're trying to keep it kid-friendly and affordable."
