'This I Believe' event tonight at library

Thursday, November 4, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- Putnam County READS: This I Believe presents readings of personal essays written and read by members of the community, at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Putnam County Public Library.

Initially there were to be two reading times, noon at the Library and 7 p.m. at the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics. There will only be the 7 p.m. reading, and the event has been moved to the Putnam County Public Library's Kiwanis Room.

In introducing the original 1950s This I Believe radio series, host Edward R. Murrow said, "Never has the need for personal philosophies of this kind been so urgent."

From the beginning, middle school, high school, college students and adults from Putnam County have been invited to contribute to the Putnam County READS project by writing and submitting their own statements of personal belief. For the writers this has been a very challenging process.

Jeffrey Ashby will read his essay "I Believe in the Power of the Human Spirit."

Next, Nancy McFarland will share "I Believe That Momentous Decisions Often Prove to Be Serendipitous and Fulfilling."

Christine Osborne will read her essay "I Believe in Passing on the Goodness of Caring."

"I Believe in the Library" will be read by Joan Osborn, which she wrote last year and was posted on the "This I Believe" website.

This program concludes the 2010 Putnam County READS and is part of the week's ArtsFest activities.
