Putnam County Cover Crop Tour is Nov. 17

Friday, November 5, 2010

The Putnam Co. Soil and Water Conservation District is planning a Cover Crop Field Tour on Nov.17 from 1:30 to 3:30pm.

The tour will start at Britton Farms near Roachdale. Cisco Seeds donated seed for the various plots that were planted in September.

The very dry weather has had an effect on the seed mixtures; however, there has been growth.

Come visit with Hans Kok, Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative spokesperson and Barry Fisher, NRCS state agronomist as they talk about the types of soils, seed incorporation methods, seed mixtures and other points of interest for those interested in using cover crops as a way to improve soil health and cut back on erosion.

It will be a great opportunity for no-till farmers to network. It sis hoped that interest will be generated for setting up round table meetings on various farms to offer current topics within the no-till cropping system community of what is on the horizon for farmers that have been using this cropping system for numerous years.

A map to other cover crop sites will be available for a self-guided tour to see different types of cover crops and methods of incorporation throughout the northeastern part of Putnam County.

RSVP by Nov.12 to guarantee there are enough materials for everyone by calling the office at 653-7454.

This event will be held rain or shine. Those who require seating should bring lawn chairs, but be aware that the terrain will be rough.

NRCS and SWCD are equal opportunity providers. Those who need special assistive devices for this event can contact the SWCD office.
