Sgt. Matthew Spears of the Indiana National Guard was a special Veterans Day guest of Fillmore Elementary second graders. Spears spoke to the students about Veterans Day and why it is celebrated. He told the children about his career in the National Guard and the countries that he has served in around the world, and he surprised the students with a sack full of souvenirs. Sgt. Spears then went to the gymnasium for the Veterans Day ceremony, where the Pledge of Allegiance was said and a variety of patriotic songs were performed. Several veterans were recognized during the ceremony, and Sgt. Spears brought a flag with him that he had carried all over the world. He picked four second-graders -- Brayden Grable, Landon Clark, Zion Harris and Tylar McClintock --to help demonstrate how to properly fold the American Flag and what each star and stripe stood for. He also explained what each fold of the flag meant. Contributed photo
