Man arrested for bike theft

GREENCASTLE -- On Tuesday at 2:05 p.m., an Indiana State Police trooper and Putnam County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Brazil man for allegedly stealing a bicycle in Hendricks County and attempting to ride it to Brazil.

Robert Wickware, black male, 41, Brazil, was arrested on suspicion of theft.

The incident began at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when Putnam County Sheriff's Dispatch notified the Putnamville Post that the suspect in a Hendricks County theft investigation was spotted on foot near the Quick Mart station at U.S. 40 and U.S. 231.

Master Trooper DuJuan McFadden and Putnam County Sheriff's deputies responded to the area. After a few minutes of searching, the suspect was spotted in a ditch along U.S. 40 nearly one-half mile west of U.S. 231 in Putnam County.

He was immediately taken into custody by McFadden and transported to the Putnam County Jail, eventually relayed to the custody of the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office for filing of theft charges.

The suspect was allegedly walking eastbound along U.S. 40 earlier in the afternoon and entered a yard at 2402 West U.S. 40, Clayton, removing a NEXT Avalon 7-speed mountain bike valued at $150. The suspect then rode east on U.S. 40.

Witnesses gave a description of the alleged thief to the victim and he eventually caught up with the suspect on U.S. 40 near Mount Meridian. The victim was able to act as a "Good Samaritan" and offer the suspect a ride. The victim placed the bike in the rear of his truck and then told the suspect the bike was stolen from his residence and he was calling police. The victim briefly left the scene and called police.

The suspect was able to get a ride from a passing motorist to the station at U.S. 40 and U.S. 231, where he was spotted and arrested.

  • Bike theft? Big crime in Putnam County once again.

    At least Wickware can't throw out the race card on this one.

  • Wow. youare kidding right. Dude steals a bike then the victim recovers the item on his own and offers a ride so they can call the police. Hmm sounds fishy to me. OMG petty petty petty. what is that a misdomeanor or and infraction. Oh thats right he is black and I would guess he victim was white so now its a felony.. did police find drugs on him or maybe even a broken tail light or a expired license plate...Oh thats right he jacked a bike and was later arrested with out the bike.Technically speaking If I were the guy I would be like I dont know what this white guy is talking about..

  • No matter what the topic, society needs to quit looking at race. The color of a person's skin does not matter!

  • Would you consider it a petty crime, hardly worth considering if it were your car that was stolen?

    To some people, a bicycle is their car.

    Obviously not in this case, but for some people, a job could be lost if their bike was stolen.

  • I believe that race should be divided into four categories.

    l. Americans, those born and want to live in this country, and deserve all rights as a citizen.

    2. Pre-American, those not born in this country but want to live here, and are going through the proper steps and language to become an American citizen.

    3. Non-Americans, those here legally and properly documented for a specified period of time, and abide by the laws of our country but do not have the benefits as citizens do.

    4. Illegals, those that do not fit the first three catagories, which should not be here or have any of the rights we have.

    Race by color should be abolished, there are great, good, normal, bad, and lowlifes in all colors of skin, and I believe color should only be used as a means to assist in the description of a person for only specific non-racial identification such as to locate someone. Wickware is a theif or not a theif, that is for the judicial system to decide, but I bet other colors of skin have been charged with the same thing.

    The media is one of many who continue to promote separation of race, the government uses it to their advantage every time they get a chance, God forbid color went by the wayside, a lot of the sneaky instigators and promoters of separation would be out of jobs.

  • Really? Someone is going to throw the race card on this. Here is something to look at.

    IC 35-43-4-2

    Theft; receiving stolen property

    Sec. 2. (a) A person who knowingly or intentionally exerts unauthorized control over property of another person, with intent to deprive the other person of any part of its value or use, commits theft, a Class D felony.

    I don't see anything about race in that code. So no matter who would have stolen that bike, regardless of their race or color would be initially charged with a D felony. Besides, once he goes to court it will probably get dropped to a conversion charge which is an A misdemeanor.

  • Ok, this is funny and sad at the same time. This guy stole my bicycle back in the early '90's from my parents house in Brazil, rode it to Terre Haute and tried to sell it to the bike shop I'd just bought it from.
