GREENCASTLE -- The Greencastle coed swim teams fell to Terre Haute South Tuesday, with the boys losing 112-62 and the girls falling 100-86.

Jay Guffey won the 50 freestyle (22.42) and 100 freestyle (49.17), while Nash Firebaugh took the 100 butterfly in 55.11. Jesse Elkins, Walter Chiarella, Firebaugh and Guffey teamed up to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.1.

For the girls, Sydney Cassida posted personal bests in the 200 and 100 backstroke. Melanie Bittles posted a season-best time in the 100 butterfly (1:09).

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Sydney Terry, Emily Wheeler, Rachel Custis and Bittles won in a time of 1:51.4.

Beasley said the relay's time was by far its fastest of the season thus far.

The Greencastle girls divers swept the top three spots on the night.

Head coach Luke Beasley said the meet was an excellent one for the Tiger Cubs this early in the season.

"This was an excellent effort for us tonight.," Beasley said. "Last year, we traveled to THS and really performed poorly -- and our swimmers will tell you that as well. But tonight was a completely different story. Terre Haute brought very deep and talented teams to Greencastle, but at no point were our swimmers daunted or overwhelmed by them.

"I don't think our girls came within 60 of Terre Haute last year, so the fact that we battled with them right to the end is extremely encouraging. These girls are competitors," he said.
